INTRODUCTION For over two hundred years, the United States relied on ships as connective links of a nation. Vessels crossing the Atlantic, Caribbean, and Pacific Oceans, and our inland waters made fundamental contributions to colonial settlement, development of trade, exploration, national defense, and territorial expansion. Unfortunately, we have lost much of this maritime tradition, and most ...

Background: Maritime employees are a hard to reach population group. The mandatory medical examinations of seafarers, fishermen and offshore workers are performed by GPs with training in maritime medicine. However, they might as well consult their regular general practitioner for other health concerns. So far very little is known about the breadth of services and follow up practices offered to ...

As in every industry at risk, the human and organizational factors constitute the main stakes for maritime safety. Furthermore, several events at sea have been used to develop appropriate risk models. The investigation on maritime accidents is, nowadays, a very important tool to identify the problems related to human factor and can support accident prevention and the improv...

This paper introduces the general notion of elastic interfaces and the derived concepts of transparency and tailorability, and exemplifies the notions in the domain of maritime instrumentation. It concludes that maritime automation to some degree already follows principles of transparency and possibly might benefit from adopting a disciplined version of tailorability.

Maritime wireless communication is different from terrestrial wireless communication, due to difference of environments. In this paper focuses to simulate on IEEE 802.16j for ship to ship maritime communication under various sea states. We describe BER level according to sea states under Rician fading channel model. BER patterns are designed using MATLAB.

Quaternary glaciations in Antarctica drastically modified geographical ranges and population sizes of marine benthic invertebrates and thus affected the amount and distribution of intraspecific genetic variation. Here, we present new genetic information in the Antarctic limpet Nacella concinna, a dominant Antarctic benthic species along shallow ice-free rocky ecosystems. We examined the pattern...

Understanding tree recruitment is needed to forecast future forest distribution. Many studies have reported the relevant ecological factors that affect recruitment success in trees, but the potential for genetic-based differences in recruitment has often been neglected. In this study, we established a semi-natural reciprocal sowing experiment to test for local adaptation and microenvironment ef...
