Conduction of tele-3D-computer assisted operations as well as other telemedicine procedures often requires highest possible quality of transmitted medical images and video. Unfortunately, those data types are always associated with high telecommunication and storage costs that sometimes prevent more frequent usage of such procedures. We present a novel algorithm for lossless compression of medi...

A method for irreversible compression of medical image sequences is described. The method relies on discrete cosine transform and motion-compensated prediction to reduce intraand inter-frame redundancies in medical image sequences. Simulation examples are presented.

The annual volume of imaging data in modern paperless hospitals can approach up to 10 terabytes, heavily pressing the storage and transmission requirements (Choong et al., 2007). Utilizing efficient compression techniques for those data in order to reduce associated costs is very attractive from both viewpoints: financial and organizational (Sanchez, Abugharbieh & Nasiopoulos, 2009; Sanchez et ...

In this paper, we discuss about a simple and lossless compression method for compression of medical images. Method is based on wavelet transform of medical application. Wavelets provide a mathematical way of encoding information in such a way that it is layered according to level of detail. These approximations can be stored using a lot less space than the original data. Here a low complex 2D i...

Medical images like X-ray, CT or MRI produces visual representation of inner body structure. To recognize and name the exact character of a disease or a problem of human health condition, medical imaging is best method for them. For storage & transmission purpose there exist a need for compression of these images. Current compression schemes provide a very high compression rate with a considera...

In this paper a new method of image data compression for medical images has been proposed to achieve high PSNR (Peak Signal to Noise Ratio). Image compression using Set Partitioning In Hierarchical Trees (SPIHT) transform is being compared with the other well known wavelets like Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT), Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT), Dual Tree Complex Wavelet Transform (DTCWT) and Em...

Wavelet-based image compression is proving to be a very effective technique for medical images, giving significantly better results than the JPEG algorithm. A novel scheme for encoding wavelet coefficients, termed set partitioning in hierarchical trees, has recently been proposed and yields significantly better compression than more standard methods. We report the results of experiments compari...

In 2-D image compression, recent approaches based on image inpainting with edge-enhancing anisotropic diffusion (EED) rival the transform-based quasi-standards JPEG and JPEG 2000 and are even able to surpass it. In this paper, we extend successful concepts from these 2-D methods to the 3-D setting, thereby establishing the first PDE-based 3-D image compression algorithm. This codec uses a cuboi...

In recent years, wavelet lifting is widely used in digital image processing. Different lifting schemes decorrelate digital medical image sets differently. The difference is due to the properties of the lifting schemes and the way the image data is processed by these schemes. Each medical image has a foreground (the medical data) surrounded by background. The background is not used by the radiol...

Digital medical imaging systems like Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) has become a crucial tool supporting both decision making and treatment procedures in medical environments. Advantages come from reduced storage and management costs associated with image data and increased intra and interinstitutional portability of data in communication networks. One of the most important b...
