The fate of pollutants in the environment is affected by the presence of easily degradable carbon sources. As a step towards understanding these complex interactions, a model system was explored: the degradation of mixtures of glucose (i.e., an easily degradable substrate) and 3-phenylpropionic acid (3ppa) (a model pollutant) by Escherichia coli ML 30 was studied systematically in carbon-limite...

Tissue culture is an in-vitro technique for replicating a plant without introducing the degree of genetic variability inherent in sexual reproduction. Tissue culture has proven commercially important for the replication of ornamental varieties of house plants and is used extensively in research for applications in forestry. Activated carbon (AC) was initially added to tissue culture media in an...

in the present study, carbon species including organic carbon (oc), elemental carbon (ec), and water-soluble organic carbon (wsoc) concentration in pm2.5 were assessed at an urban site of tehran, iran during march to june 2014. the pm2.5 samples were collected using an frmomnitm ambient air sampler. thermal gravimetric analysis (tga) was used to analyze oc and ec. the results showed that pm2.5 ...

Carbon and nitrogen assimilation abilities of yeast isolates are among the first properties tested (2-4) in identifying and classifying yeasts. The recommended tests are conventionally done in liquid medium or by an auxanographic method whereby a solid medium containing all the nutrients and growth factors required by a yeast, except a carbon source, is seeded with the test yeast and then diffe...

In the present work the influence of vanadium on the hardenability and the bainitic transformation of a medium carbon steel is analyzed. While V in solid solution enhances the former, it hardly affects bainitic transformation. The results also reveal an unexpected result, an increase of the prior austenite grain size as the V content increases.

Carbon monoxide is the second most abundant molecule on icy grains in the interstellar medium. These grains are under the influence of ionizing radiation, which induces the chemical reaction within the ice. Here we report the first observation of subliming pentacarbon dioxide (C5O2) after irradiation of pure carbon monoxide ice with energetic electrons. Our results show that pentacarbon dioxide...

Bacillus subtilis, locally isolated, produced significant level of xylanase activity in the presence of different carbon sources. However, B. subtilis performed well when grown on pretreated natural substrates such as rice straw, wheat straw, bagasse, wheat bran and kraft pulp at 2% concentration. The organism produced higher level of xylanasse activity when bagasse was used as a carbon source ...

To select a suitable synthetic medium for kanamycin production, we tested a number of carbon and nitrogen compounds for their effect on growth of Streptomyces kanamyceticus ATCC 12853 as well on kanamycin production. Galactose was found to be the most suitable carbon source, though dextrin, soluble starch, and potato starch gave moderate yields. Sodium nitrate and glycine were adequate nitrogen...

Alternaria solani was a potential leaf spot pathogen of Azadirachta indica L, was isolated from diseased Azadirachta indica L leaves from Nashik and used for the present study. Pathogen was grown on the Czapek-Dox liquid medium substituting or adding different carbon, nitrogen to study phenol production. Considerable variation in the production of total phenol was observed when different carbon...

Ethanol is an important industrial product. It can be degraded by microorganisms to use as sole source of carbon. Trichophyton mentagrophytes and Epidermophyton floccosum are most known species of dermatophytes. Their ability to degrade ethanol was detected. Low concentrations of ethanol enhanced two tested species of dermatophytes to grow on culture medium faster in absence of carbon source. A...
