Introduction: Degenerative arthritis of knee joint is common, but treatment is a difficult problem. Especially with increasing age, it leads to serious dysfunction and affects the quality of life of the person negatively. In this study, it was aimed to measure some morphological values of tibia proximal in healthy individuals and to establish normal reference intervals. Method: The study was ca...

This paper describes a feasibility study for computer image analysis of corneal endothelial specular micrographs. The analysis involved image enhancement, boundary detection of individual cells, and subsequent calculation of cell area, cell area distribution, cell perimeter, cell orientation, and cell diameter. Cell areas produced by automated analysis agreed well with manually measured cell ar...

In a study involving 50 optic nerves isolated from 3 different strains of adult male mice, C57BL, CBA and (C57BL x CBA) Fl hybrids, and from adult female CBA strain mice, we observed that the mouse had a lower mean total myelinated nerve fibre count than other mammals such as the rat, cat, rabbit, monkey and man where similar information was available from the literature. The nerve fibre spectr...

In this paper we present an approach for diatom classification on the basis of contour information. First an initial feature set is analysed. Then we present a method to reduce this initial feature space while preserving its discriminative power. Both results based on the initial feature space and the reduced one are compared and the classification method is discussed.

BACKGROUND Most published attempts to quantify footprint shape are based on a small number of measurements. We applied geometric morphometric methods to study shape variation of the complete footprint outline in a sample of 83 adult women. METHODS The outline of the footprint, including the toes, was represented by a comprehensive set of 85 landmarks and semilandmarks. Shape coordinates were ...

To facilitate high-throughput quantitative analysis of neuronal structure, this study optimized the diOlistic method of whole neuron labeling to examine multiple neurons in fixed brain, and optimized image acquisition parameters to preserve signal for subsequent photoconversion. Fluorescent dye-coated gold particles were successively delivered by helium-powered ejection to 250 microm thick brai...

The ultrastructural features that are critical to the efficient functioning of the blood-brain barrier (b-bb) were quantified in typical barrier vessels, i.e., cerebral gray and white matter capillaries, and compared with the same parameters in cerebral nonbarrier capillaries (area postrema), and in somatic capillaries, (muscle) of the mouse. The image analysis was done with the help of a simpl...

Stereologic analysis was made of cell surface membrane (PM) and two interrelated cytoplasmic membrane systems, the vacuole membranes (VM) and small vesicle membranes (SVM) . Volumes and surface areas of the three membrane compartments were measured during steady-state pinocytosis, when membrane recycling is rapid, and during phagocytosis, when a shift to a lower rate of membrane uptake by endoc...

The study was conducted in five selected districts in Bale zone South East, Ethiopia to evaluate the morphometric difference among indigenous chicken populations. Simple random sampling method was used to select 400 households who owned indigenous chicken population. From these households, a total of 840 adult (more than 6 months of age) indigenous chickens (225 males and 615 females) were used...

The morphologic and genetic variations of Engraulis encrasicolus (L. 1758) were studied based on morphometric, meristic and allozyme analyses. Samples were collected throughout the Black, Marmara and Aegean Seas. Discriminant function analysis of both morphometric and meristic characters indicated the existence of four morphologically differentiated groups of E. encrasicolus. The Aegean Sea and...
