introduction to extract and combine information from different modalities, fusion techniques are commonly applied to promote system performance. in this study, we aimed to examine the effectiveness of fusion techniques in emotion recognition. materials and methods electrocardiogram (ecg) and galvanic skin responses (gsr) of 11 healthy female students (mean age: 22.73±1.68 years) were collected ...

To classify time series by nearest neighbors, we need to specify or learn one or several distance measures. We consider variations of the Mahalanobis distance measures which rely on the inverse covariance matrix of the data. Unfortunately — for time series data — the covariance matrix has often low rank. To alleviate this problem we can either use a pseudoinverse, covariance shrinking or limit ...

A method for the detection of multivariate outliers is proposed which accounts for the data structure and sample size. The cut-off value for identifying outliers is defined by a measure of deviation of the empirical distribution function of the robust Mahalanobis distance from the theoretical distribution function. The method is easy to implement and fast to compute.

The validation of matching hypotheses using Mahalanobis distance is extensively utilized in robotic applications, and in general data-association techniques. The Ma-halanobis distance, deened by t h e i n n o vation and its covariance, is compared with a threshold deened by the chi-square distribution to validate a matching hypothesiss the validation test is a time-consuming operation. This pap...

Intra-plaque hemorrhage (IPH) and lipid core, characteristics of rupture prone carotid plaques, are often visualized in vivo with MRI using T1 weighted gradient and spin echo, respectively. Increasing magnetic field strength may help to identify IPH and lipid core better. As a proof of concept, automatic segmentation of plaque components was performed with the Mahalanobis distance (MD) measure ...

A methodology for detecting the gradual health degradation of electronic products is presented by defining a health indicator to represent a product’s health state in a time interval. A health indicator is defined as the weighted sum of a histogram bin’s fractional contribution in a time interval that is based on the data collection rate, the likelihood of change in a product’s performance, and...

In this paper we describe a hybrid technique of Minimax search and aggregate Mahalanobis distance function synthesis to evolve Awale game player. The hybrid technique helps to suggest a move in a short amount of time without looking into endgame database. However, the effectiveness of the technique is heavily dependent on the training dataset of the Awale strategies utilized. The evolved player...

The supervised self-organizing map consists in associating output vectors to input vectors through a map, after self-organizing it on the basis of both input and desired output given altogether. This paper compares the use of Euclidian distance and Mahalanobis distance for this model. The distance comparison is made on a data classification application with either global approach or partitionin...

Accurate recognition of blurred images is a practical but hitherto mostly overlooked problem. In this paper, we quantify the level of noise in blurred images and propose a new modification of discriminant functions that adaps to the level of noise. Experimental results indicate that the proposed method actually enhances the existing statistical methods, and has impressive ability to recognize b...
