The resistance of antimicrobials has become a global hazard with the irrational use of antibiotics. Infection of drug-resistance bacteria seriously threatens human health. Currently there is an urgent need for the development of novel antimicrobial agents with new mechanisms and lower levels of toxicity. In this paper, a series of (S,Z)-4-methyl-2-(4-oxo-5-((5-substitutedphenylfuran-2-yl) methy...

CONTEXT Pulsatile lavage is a high-pressure irrigation treatment used increasingly in a variety of health care settings to debride wounds. Infection control precautions are not routinely used during the procedure and are not included in pulsatile lavage equipment package labeling. OBJECTIVES To investigate an outbreak of multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii and to test the hypothesis t...

Drug-resistant tuberculosis, in particular Multi-Drug Resistant (MDR-TB) is an increasing global concern and a major burden for some developing countries, especially the BRICS. It is assumed that every year roughly 350 000 new MDR-TB cases occur in the world, on average in 20.5% of TB patients that have been previously treated but also in 3.5% of persons that have never been on TB treatment bef...

BACKGROUND The "fitness" of an infectious pathogen is defined as the ability of the pathogen to survive, reproduce, be transmitted, and cause disease. The fitness of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDRTB) relative to drug-susceptible tuberculosis is cited as one of the most important determinants of MDRTB spread and epidemic size. To estimate the relative fitness of drug-resistant tuberculosi...

The emergence of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis underscores the need for low-cost, rapid methods to determine the susceptibility of Mycobacterium tuberculosis to antibiotics. A new, rapid, easily read, and inexpensive colorimetric method with a tetrazolium indicator performs this determination as quickly and accurately as the more expensive Alamar Blue technique.

In 2008, diagnosis and investigation of 2 multidrug-resistant tuberculosis cases with matching genotypes led to identification of an outbreak among foreign-born persons who performed short-term seafood production work in Alaska during 2006. Tuberculosis control programs should consider the possibility of domestic transmission even among foreign-born patients.

To determine differences in the ability of Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains to withstand antituberculosis drug treatment, we compared the activity of antituberculosis drugs against susceptible Beijing and East-African/Indian genotype M. tuberculosis strains. Beijing genotype strains showed high rates of mutation within a wide range of drug concentrations, possibly explaining this genotype's a...

The multidrug-resistant bacterial infections cause high mortality in immunocompromised patients because of the limited antibacterial choices. Tigecycline, first member of the glycylcyclines, has in vitro activity against a wide variety of organisms, including multidrug-resistant pathogens; however, it has not yet been approved for use in children. Herein, we report a nine-year-old girl with acu...

In 2015, only 49% of notified multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) patients in China were estimated to have initiated treatment, compared with 90% of those worldwide. A case-control study was conducted to identify the reasons for non-enrollment in treatment among MDR-TB patients in Hunan province, China. All detected MDR-TB patients registered in designated MDR-TB hospitals in Hunan provi...
