In 26 patients with spasmodic torticollis followed up for a median period of 12 years, the frequency of sustained remission was 23%, the median duration of remission was 8 years and duration of torticollis before remission 3 years. These results are more favourable than stated in the literature and should be taken into consideration before recommending surgical treatment.
The impact of botulinum toxin injection on psychological function was assessed in 26 patients with idiopathic torticollis. Eighty five per cent of the patients and 88% of the relatives considered torticollis to be better following the injections. Symptomatic improvement with the injections was associated with significant reduction of depression and disability, but non-significant improvement in...
This study focuses on the treatment of the muscle function imbalance and asymmetric head posture for infants with congenital muscular torticollis (CMT). The aim of this study was to compare treatment time for groups with different strategies for muscle function training. The treatment goal was to achieve a symmetric head posture. Thirty-seven infants were randomised to three groups. Group I was...
osting by E Abstract Introduction: Spasmodic torticollis (ST) is a neuromuscular disorder characterized by uncontrolled clonic and intermittently tonic spasm of the neck muscles. BACKGROUND: Congenital muscular torticollis (CMT) is a common pediatric abnormality involving sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscle. The pathogenesis of CMT has yet to be elucidated, but intrauterine abnormalities seem plausible explanation. This condition, if left untreated, may result in craniofacial asymmetry, neck pain, and limited movement. We reported case an 11-year-old girl with CMT, which s...
OBJECTIVE To determine which factors affect the rehabilitation duration in patients with congenital muscular torticollis (CMT) and to predict the duration of rehabilitation and prognosis. METHODS One hundred and eighteen patients (79 males and 39 females) who were diagnosed with CMT and received physical therapy were enrolled in this study. We retrospectively reviewed the information in terms...
OBJECTIVE To investigate the coexistence rate and related factors of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) and congenital muscular torticollis (CMT), and to determine whether ultrasonography (US) gives good value for screening of DDH in CMT. METHOD We prospectively examined 121 infants (73 males and 48 females) diagnosed with CMT to determine the incidence of DDH by US. We also assessed th...
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Infants grow rapidly, which causes the SCM to thicken physiologically. Therefore some cases of physiologically-thickened SCM can be confused with a poor response to physical therapy. There have been only a few quantitative ultrasonographic studies on the clinical outcome of rehabilitation for CMT. Our aim was to evaluate whether a new sonographic assessment method that us...
