Bionanotechnology is a combination of three terms: “bios” meaning “life,” “nano” (origin in Greek) meaning “dwarf,” and “technologia” (origin in Greek—comprised of “techne” meaning “craft,” and “logia” meaning “saying”), which is a broad term dealing with the use and knowledge of humanity’s tools and crafts. Biomolecular Nanotechnology—or Bionanotechnology—is a term coined for the area of study...

Bulk quantities of polypyrrole nanofibers and nanospheres can be synthesized with a facile, one-step "green-nano" chemical oxidative polymerization approach, by simply using different reaction media.

In this article, we study dynamics of adsorbate island formation in a model plasma-condensate system numerically. We derive the generalized reaction-diffusion model for adsorptive multilayer system by taking into account anisotropy in transfer of adatoms between neighbor layers induced by electric field. It will be found that with an increase in the electric field strength, a structural transfo...

New and unknown electrocatalytic oxidation of water was found to occur on a nano-gold attached palladium electrode. Since the oxidation potential was negative enough to that of well-known normal oxidation of water to form O2, the direct use of water as a fuel, instead of alcohols, might be possible using the nano-gold/palladium electrode.

A simple and precise size measurement device of microparticles in liquid has been developed by using a narrow gap between a cylindrical lens and a flat glass wall, in which the distance of the gap is precisely determined by the diffraction Moiré pattern of irradiated light. Two different methods to transfer the particles toward the center line of the lens, a hydrodynamic flow mode and an electr...

Objectives: Eriobotrya japonica belongs to the Rosaceae. Studies have shown that the flowers of this plant are rich in phenolic and flavonoid compounds. Accorrdingly, the evaluation of antioxidative effects of Eriobotrya japonica Flower Extract (EJFE) have been performed in vitro. Material and Methods: In this study, to investigate the influences of components of EJFE on its antioxidative activ...

BACKGROUND Due to the random and systematic measurement errors associated with current dietary assessment instruments, there is a need to develop more objective methods of measuring the intake of foods of importance to human health. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to test whether urinary excretion of flavonoids could be used to identify subjects who are meeting Norwegian recommendatio...

We report the first experimental demonstration of combined spatial and temporal control of light transmission through opaque media. This control is achieved by solely manipulating spatial degrees of freedom of the incident wave front. As an application, we demonstrate that the present approach is capable of forming bandwidth-limited ultrashort pulses from the otherwise randomly transmitted ligh...

Piezoelectric materials capable of converting between mechanical and electrical energy have a great range of potential applications in micro- and nano-scale smart devices; however, their performance tends to be greatly degraded when reduced to a thin film due to the large clamping force by the substrate and surrounding materials. Herein, we report an effective method for synthesizing isolated p...

In an effort to maximize the liquid slip on superhydrophobic surfaces, we investigate the role of the nanoscale roughness on microscale structures by developing well-defined micro-nano hierarchical structures. The nonwetting stability and slip length on the dual-scale micro-nano structures are measured and compared with those on single-scale micro-smooth structures. A force balance between a li...
