We report what is, to our knowledge, the first demonstration of strong Bragg reflection gratings operating at -455O nm written using standard phase mask techniques in a novel multimode fiber. A reflectivity of >98% and a bandwidth of < 0.5 nm in very good agreement with modeling predictions have been observed.

BACKGROUND Reported negative ileal and total tract dietary fiber (DF) digestibility values are physiologically untenable and suggest the presence of nondietary material in the gut contents that interferes with the DF determination. OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to demonstrate the importance of interfering material (IM) when the Prosky method was used to determine DF digestibility....

In this paper we report the successful development of pressure sensitive textile prototypes based on flexible optical fibers technology. Our approach is based on thermoplastic silicone fibers, which can be integrated into woven textiles. As soon as pressure at a certain area of the textile is applied to these fibers they change their cross section reversibly, due to their elastomeric character,...

We report the fabrication and characterization of a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) with 870 nm resonance wavelength in a single-mode TOPAS microstructured polymer optical fiber (mPOF). The grating has been UV-written with the phasemask technique using a 325 nm HeCd laser. The static tensile strain sensitivity has been measured as 0.64 pm/μstrain, and the temperature sensitivity was -60 pm/C. This is...

We have numerically implemented a receiver side all-optical signal processing method, i.e. optical backward propagation (OBP), by dispersion compensating fiber (DCF) and non-linear compensator (NLC) devised by effective negative Kerr non-linear coefficient using two highly non-linear fibers (HNLFs). The method is implemented for the post-processing of fiber transmission impairments, i.e. chroma...

Most gram-negative pathogens express fibrous adhesive virulence organelles that mediate targeting to the sites of infection. The F1 capsular antigen from the plague pathogen Yersinia pestis consists of linear fibers of a single subunit (Caf1) and serves as a prototype for nonpilus organelles assembled via the chaperone/usher pathway. Genetic data together with high-resolution X-ray structures c...

Presynaptic autoreceptors modulate transmitter release at many synapses. At the mossy fiber to CA3 pyramidal cell (mf-CA3) synapse, two types of glutamatergic autoreceptors have been identified: transmitter release is reportedly suppressed by metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs) and augmented by kainate receptors (KARs). However, the net effect of these autoreceptors when activated by endo...

Methods for estimation of grow index of tealeaves based on Bi-directional Reflectance Distribution Function: BRDF measurements with ground based network cameras is proposed. Due to a fact that Near Infrared: NIR camera data is proportional to total nitrogen while that shows negative correlation to fiber contents, it is possible to estimate nitrogen and fiber contents in tealeaves with ground ba...

We computationally investigate fabrication tolerances in As2S3 negative-curvature antiresonant tube-lattice fibers. Since the dominant loss mechanisms for silica in the mid-infrared (mid-IR) is material absorption, As2S3, which offers a reduced loss over that wavelength range, is a natural candidate for mid-IR antiresonant fibers. However, any fiber fabrication technology, including for soft gl...
