Background Neonatal sepsis is one of the major causes of neonatal morbidity and mortality globally. Its incidence varies from 1 to 4 cases per 1,000 live births in developed countries. The burden of the problem occurs in the developing world while most confirmation is derived from developed countries. This study is aimed to assess the prevalence of neonatal sepsi...

Compared with planned repeat low-transverse cesarean section, vaginal birth after cesarean section (VBAC) is not associated with increased risk of maternal or neonatal mortality (strength of recommendation [SOR]: B). Morbidity is slightly increased, as evidenced by higher uterine rupture rates and some neonatal outcome measures (SOR: B).
Neonatal diabetes mellitus is underdiagnosed in the neonatal period because of the metabolic adaptation capacities of the newborns. However, it is associated with increased risk of short- and long-term morbidity; when transient it may recurs in adulthood. It is important to improve screening and early management with appropriate guidelines.
Primary hyperparathyroidism is rarely reported during pregnancy but can cause significant maternal and neonatal morbidity. We report a case of hyperparathyroidism during pregnancy requiring a median sternotomy for resection of a mediastinal parathyroid adenoma. Surgery resulted in normalisation of serum calcium, resolution of symptoms, and prevented neonatal hypocalcaemia.
QUESTIONS UNDER STUDY To determine the impact of a pro-active treatment approach on outcome of extremely low gestational age neonates (ELGANs; gestational age [GA] <28 weeks) born at the perinatal centre of Lucerne, Switzerland. METHODS We assessed rates of survival, severe neonatal morbidity and neuro-developmental impairment (NDI) of all ELGANs born alive and treated at our centre between 2...
BACKGROUND Survival is not an adequate measure of success when managing preterm infants < 24 weeks gestational age (GA). OBJECTIVE To evaluate neonatal morbidity, survival rate and outcome of preterm infants < 24 weeks GA at birth, in our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. MATERIAL AND METHODS Retrospective chart review, 1996-2009. Collected data included neonatal morbidity and mortality, follow...
Objectives. To evaluate the association between physical exercise supervised in pregnant women with chronic hypertension and/or previous preeclampsia and maternal and neonatal outcomes. Method. Randomized controlled trial, which included 116 pregnant women with chronic hypertension and/or previous preeclampsia, considered risk of preeclampsia development. They were divided into two groups: stud...
In Latin American, there is currently a regional action with the main purposes of putting the concept of severe neonatal morbidity in practice and formulating proposals for interventions. A general overview of neonatal health conditions, including morbidity and mortality, is provided to update regional knowledge on the topic. An example of the development and implementation of the concept of ma...
