Introduction: Micrometeorites represent the largest mass flux of extraterrestrial matter on Earth, and could have contributed significantly to the budget of volatile and biogenic elements at the Earth’s surface in the past [1]. Previous studies have shown that Antarctic micrometeorites (AMMs) have variable, and sometimes very high noble gas contents up to one order of magnitude higher than Orgu...

Based on accurate Lennard-Jones-type interaction potentials, we derive a closed set of state equations for the description of warm atomic gases in the presence of ionization processes. The specific heat is predicted to exhibit peaks in correspondence to single and multiple ionizations. Such kinetic analog in atomic gases of the Schottky anomaly in solids is enhanced at intermediate and low atom...

The X-ray absorption spectra have been measured near Kedge of a crystalline KOH. After the subtraction of XAFS oscillation, several features caused by multielectron transitions suggested on noble gases were detected on K in solid phase and analyzed by the use of the shakeup and shakeoff probabilities. The [ls2p], [ls3s], and [ls3p] transition onsets have been identified in the compound.

The ability to tune the strength of the attractive interaction in trapped Fermi gases is revealing the nature of superfluidity (and superconductivity) in a hitherto unexplored regime. Within the last few years we have witnessed the discovery of strongly interacting Fermi gases; over the last year we have found strong evidence for their superfluidity. These interacting gases appear at intermedia...

We present a study of the highly nonlinear optical excitation of noble gases in tapered hollow waveguides using few-femtosecond laser pulses. The local plasmonic field enhancement induces the generation of a nanometric plasma, resulting in incoherent extreme-ultraviolet fluorescence from optical transitions of neutral and ionized xenon, argon, and neon. Despite sufficient intensity in the waveg...

Ion mobility instruments that utilize nitrogen as buffer gas are often preceded by an ion trap and accumulation region that also uses nitrogen, and for different inert gases, no significant effects upon performance are expected for ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) of larger ions. However, we have observed significantly improved performance for an ion funnel trap upon adding helium; the signal in...

Much has been made of the idea of consensus in the development of the IPCC's role since it was set up in 1988 by WMO, the World Meteorological Oganisation, and UNEP, the United Nations Environment Progamme. The IPCC's scientific assessment involves studying the output from various climate models as well as various historical records of atmospheric and marine data. It is well known that the chao...

• In the original inert gas method of Kety and Schmidt the saturation of the brain with the inert gas, N,,O, is followed for 10 minutes. In a group of subjects we have studied both the saturation and the desaturation of the brain with krypton as the inert gas. The results give an experimental demonstration of a relatively small systematic error inherent in the method apparently due to differenc...

Diamond anvil cell techniques are now well established and powerful methods for measuring materials properties to very high pressure. However, high pressure resistivity measurements are challenging because the electrical contacts attached to the sample have to survive to extreme stress conditions. Until recently, experiments in a diamond anvil cell were mostly limited to non-hydrostatic or quas...
