We report on plasmonic waveguides made of a thin metal stripe surrounded on one or both sides by a Kerr nonlinear medium. Using an iterative numerical method, we investigate the stationary long-range plasmons that exist for self-focusing and self-defocusing Kerr-type nonlinearities. The solutions are similar to the wellknown case of infinitely wide nonlinear waveguides—they are strongly power-d...

We experimentally investigate the nonlinear reshaping of a continuous wave which leads to chirp-free and flat-top intense pulses or flaticons exhibiting strong temporal oscillations at their edges and a stable self-similar expansion upon propagation of their central region. Nondegenerate optical parametric amplifiers can be used to simultaneously phase conjugate and amplify a pulse in a nonlinear optical fiber. The gain in the amplifiers compensates the linear loss in the fiber, while the phase conjugation effectively neutralizes second-order dispersion, self-phase modulation, the Raman self-frequency shift, and Gordon-Haus jitter. If the remaining third-order and...

An approach is proposed to design the intelligent electrode position controller for UHP by using nonlinear scaling and fuzzy self-tuning PID control algorithm. First, nonlinear scaling of controlled variable that compensate the nonlinearity of the object is proposed. Second, a fuzzy self-tuning PID electrode position control algorithm is designed and the parameters of the fuzzy inference are op...

Nonlinear dispersive wave equations arise naturally in scientific and engineering fields such as fluid dynamics, electromagnetic theory, quantum mechanics, optical communication, nonlinear optics etc. Many important questions (both in theory and applications) are related to the interaction of two effects: energy spreading (dispersion, diffraction) and energy concentrating (nonlinear self-trappi...

Self-action effects such as self-defocusing and self-bending are well-known nonlinear optical phenomenon dating back to the 1960s. Until recently the so-called blooming or lensing effect of a symmetric beam has been a main topic of investigation. A smaller number of experiments using asymmetric beams were reported (see, for example Khoo, Golub, and Swartzlander.) Whereas many early experiments ...

We reveal that spatially localized vortex solitons become stable in self-focusing nonlinear media when the vortex symmetry-breaking azimuthal instability is eliminated by a nonlocal nonlinear response. We study the main properties of different types of vortex beams and discuss the physical mechanism of the vortex stabilization in spatially nonlocal nonlinear media.

In the boundary layers around the edges of images, basic nonlinear parabolic equations for image intensity used in image processing assume a special degenerate asymptotic form. An asymptotic self-similar solution to this degenerate equation is obtained in an explicit form. The solution reveals a substantially nonlinear effect-the formation of sharp steps at the edges of the images, leading to e...

A set of self-consistent nonlinear gyrokinetic equations is derived for relativistic charged particles in a general nonuniform magnetized plasma. Full electromagnetic-field fluctuations are considered with spatial and temporal scales given by the low-frequency gyrokinetic ordering. Self-consistency is obtained by combining the nonlinear relativistic gyrokinetic Vlasov equation with the low-freq...

Wave self-focusing in molecular systems subject to thermal effects, such as thin molecular films and long biomolecules, can be modeled by stochastic versions of the discrete self-trapping equation of Eilbeck et al. [J.C. Eilbeck, P.S. Lomdahl, A.C. Scott, The discrete self-trapping equation, Physica D 16 (1985) 318–338], which gives as a continuum limit approximation the stochastic nonlinear Sc...
