Peanut, a high-oil crop with about 50% oil content, is either crushed for oil or used as edible products. Fatty acid composition determines the oil quality which has high relevance to consumer health, flavor, and shelf life of commercial products. In addition to the major fatty acids, oleic acid (C18:1) and linoleic acid (C18:2) accounting for about 80% of peanut oil, the six other fatty acids ...

Serum albumin is a protective bacterial growth factor; by binding traces of fatty acid in the media it permits initiation of growth by the smallest possible inocula of tubercle bacilli. Each molecule of albumin binds 3 to 6 molecules of oleic acid (1 to 2 per cent of the weight of the albumin) tightly enough to prevent bacteriostasis, and 9 molecules of oleic acid in equilibrium with a saturate...

Perception of fat taste, aroma, and texture are proposed to influence food preferences, thus shaping dietary intake and eating behaviour and consequently long-term health. In this study, we investigated associations between fatty acid taste, olfaction, mouthfeel of fat, dietary intake, eating behaviour, and body mass index (BMI). Fifty women attended three sessions to assess oleic acid taste an...

The antimalarial agents NAS-91 and NAS-21 were found to express potent antimycobacterial activity, NAS-91 being more active than NAS-21. They partially inhibited mycolic acid biosynthesis and profoundly altered oleic acid production. The development of a cell-free assay for Delta 9-desaturase activity allowed direct demonstration of the inhibition of oleic acid biosynthesis by these compounds.

Staphylococcus aureus mutants lacking pigment, or expressing only low levels of pigment, were more sensitive to oleic acid than were the parent strain and mutants making more pigment than the parent. One class of mutants (colour index 5), although possessing significant levels of pigment, were nevertheless quite sensitive to oleic acid. This suggested that only certain carotenoids in the biosyn...

The safety and toxicity of nanoparticles are of growing concern despite their significant scientific interests and promising potentials in many applications. The properties of nanoparticles depend not only on the size but also the structure, microstructure and surface coating. These in turn are controlled by the synthesis and processing conditions. The dependence of cytotoxicity on particle siz...

The effects of insulin and IGF-I on fatty acid (FA) and glucose metabolism were examined using oleic acid or glucose as tracers in differentiated rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) myotubes. Insulin and IGF-I significantly reduced the production of CO(2) from oleic acid with respect to the control values. IGF-I also significantly reduced the production of acid-soluble products (ASP) and the co...

The inhibiting action of pancreatic tissue was found to be associated with the unsaturated fatty acid fraction. As small an amount of fatty acid as 0.1 mg. inhibited the chicken sarcoma agent contained in 0.2 cc. of a 1:60 aqueous extract of Chicken Tumor I. The unsaturated fatty acid had an acid number and an iodine number similar to those for oleic acid. Commercial oleic acid also was found t...

Milk fat globule size is determined by the size of its precursors-intracellular lipid droplets-and is tightly associated with its composition. We examined the relationship between phospholipid composition of mammary epithelial cells and the size of both intracellular and secreted milk fat globules. Primary culture of mammary epithelial cells was cultured in medium without free fatty acids (cont...
