phase noise, coherent reflectometry, FMCW, Rayleigh backscattering, fiberoptic interferometry An analysis of coherent optical FMCW is presented. It shows the limitations imposed on measurements of discrete reflections and of Rayleigh backscattering due to phase noise originating in the finite coherence length of the optical source. The dependence of the range for accurate measurements on partic...
We study the unitary time evolution of photons interacting with a dielectric resonator using coherent control pulses. We show that non-Markovianity of transient photon dynamics in the resonator subsystem may be controlled to within a photon-resonator transit time. In general, appropriate use of coherent pulses and choice of spatial subregion may be used to create and control a wide range of non...
Recent years have witnessed great advances in the study of molecular spectroscopy and dynamics using coherent laser spectroscopy. In this article, we review recent work from our laboratory concerning the application of coherent laser techniques such as polarization quantum beat spectroscopy and transient laser induced grating spectroscopy to the study of transient molecules and free radicals. H...
A coherent optical RF channelizer has been constructed and characterized. The optical channelizer is based on a free-space optical diffraction grating, and utilizes coherent optical heterodyne detection to translate all of the frequency channels to a common intermediate frequency (IF). The designed optical channelizer has a 1-GHz channel spacing, and a nominal 5-GHz IF, and can offer an instant...
In the 1980s, E. Wolf proposed a new theory of partial coherence formulated in the space-frequency domain.1,2 The fundamental result of this theory is the fact that a stationary optical field of any state of coherence may be represented as a superposition of coherent modes, i.e., elementary uncorrelated field oscillations that are spatially completely coherent.† The importance of this result ca...
For the first time we demonstrate sampling downconversion of a 10GHz phase modulated optical signal using an integrated coherent receiver with feedback. At a downconverted frequency of 100 MHz we measure 19dB improvement in SIR. ©2008 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (060.1660) Coherent communications; (130.0250) Optoelectronics; (120. 5060) Phase Modulation
− We propose ultra stable coherent laser sources based on optical injection locked single mode of the femtosecond fiber laser comb. The source is discretely tunable coherent optical sources by two DFB lasers, which are injection-locked to a respective single mode of the fiber laser comb with the frequency difference of 500 MHz, that is exactly twice of the comb repetition frequency.
We present a new interferometric technique for measuring Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering (CARS) and Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) signals. Heterodyne detection is employed to increase the sensitivity in both CARS and SHG signal detection, which can also be extended to different coherent processes. The exploitation of the mentioned optical nonlinearities for molecular contrast enhanceme...
