This article presents an overview of optical wireless (OW) communication systems that operate both in the short(personal and indoor systems) and the long-range (outdoor and hybrid) regimes. Each of these areas is discussed in terms of (a) key requirements, (b) their application framework, (c) major impairments and applicable mitigation techniques, and (d) current and/or future trends. Personal ...

Contemporary optical fibers can deal with almost all of the unfavorable effects which are known these days. They have sufficiently low specific slump, they can handle a slump caused by OHions, they can restrain the multimode effect and finally they can compensate a chromatic dispersion. But there is one problem, which the present science can’t solve and this problem is the Polarization Mode Dis...

The focus of the current research is to identify people of interest in social networks. We are especially interested in studying dark networks, which represent illegal or covert activity. In such networks, people are unlikely to disclose accurate information when queried. We present REDLEARN, an algorithm for sampling dark networks with the goal of identifying as many nodes of interest as possi...

We present numerical techniques that allow efficient modeling of the transport of broadband services over fiber-optic links in access networks using various technologies. Application examples of Hybrid Fiber Coax (HFC), Radio-over-Fiber (RoF) systems and 10-Gb/s Ethernet transport over multimode fiber are provided to demonstrate the value of simulation during the R&D and deployment phases of pr...

A concept study for a bend sensor based on a fibre Bragg grating (FBG) and a compact evaluation unit for the investigated type of sensor is presented. The fibreoptic sensor is capable of resolving the radius and the direction of the bend. The measurement data evaluation unit is capable of resolving multiple distributed FBG sensors, which are present in a single fibre at different positions.

In this paper, we propose an optical burst switching architecture in time division multiplexed wavelength-routing networks, in which an edge OBS node requests time slots necessary to optical bursts to the time division multiplexed wavelength-routing network. Our scheme is attempt to improve the burst contention resolution and optical channel utilization.

Face and facial expressions play essential roles in interpersonal communication. Most of the current works on the facial expression recognition attempt to recognize a small set of the prototypic expressions such as happy, surprise, anger, sad, disgust and fear. However the most of the human emotions are communicated by changes in one or two of discrete features. In this paper, we develop a faci...

We present an automated approach to classify sentences of scholarly work with respect to their rhetorical function. While previous work that achieves this task of argumentative zoning requires richly annotated input, our approach is robust to noise and can process raw text. Even in cases where the input has noise (as is obtained from optical character recognition or text extraction from PDF fil...

Over the past few decades, there has been a considerable interest in the use of distributed optical fibre sensors (DOFS) for structural health monitoring of composite structures. In aerospace-related work, health monitoring of the adhesive joints of composites has become more significant, as they can suffer from cracking and delamination, which can have a significant impact on the integrity of ...
