The measurement of vortex flows with particle-image velocimetry (PIV) is particularly susceptible to error arising from the finite mass of the tracer particles, owing to the high velocities and accelerations typically experienced. A classical model of Stokes-flow particle transport is adopted, and an approximate solution for the case of particle transport within an axisymmetric, quasi-two-dimen...
We present a meshless simulation method for multiphase fluid-particle systems using Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) and the Discrete Element Method (DEM). Rather than fully resolving the interstitial fluid, which is often infeasible, we use an unresolved fluid model based on the locally averaged Navier Stokes equations. A variable-h SPH formulation is used to calculate the fluid phase, wh...
Spatial and velocity statistics of heavy point-like particles in incompressible, homogeneous, and isotropic three-dimensional turbulence is studied by means of direct numerical simulations at two values of the Taylor-scale Reynolds number Reλ ∼ 200 and Reλ ∼ 400, corresponding to resolutions of 512 and 2048 grid points, respectively. Particles Stokes number values range from St ≈ 0.2 to 70. Sta...
In this study, the pressure drop for the binary mixtures of particles differing in size and density in a pseudo-2D spouted bed was experimentally studied. A binary mixture of solid particles including sand, Gypsum, and polyurethane was used in the experimental setup. Effects of static bed height, cone angle, particles diameter, and a particles weight fraction on the bed pressure drop were e...
Both cellular motility and intracellular particle movement are compared between normal Dictyostelium amebae of strain AX4 and amebae of a myosin II heavy chain null mutant, HS2215, using the computer assisted "Dynamic Morphology System." In AX4 cells rapidly translocating in buffer, cytoplasmic expansion is apical and the majority of intracellular particles move anteriorly, towards the site of ...
Recently, it has been suggested that a microparticulate bombardment system would be a very useful tool for the delivery of a variety of powdered drugs as an alternative to parenteral injection via a needle. However the relationship between the particle dynamics and introduction into the skin has not been researched using this system. In the present study, we analyzed the velocity of micropartic...
This paper examines the generation and propagation of a Third order solitary water wave along the channel. First the Incompressible Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (ISPH) numerical method is described and the boundary condition handling method is presented. The numerical model is then used to simulate solitary wave propagation along the fixed depth channel. The numerical results are compared wi...
This work presents a computer simulation framework based on discrete element method to analyze manufacturing processes that comprise a loosely flowing stream of particles in a carrier fluid being deposited on a target surface. The individual particulate dynamics under the combined action of particle collisions, fluid-particle interactions, particle-surface contact and adhesive interactions is s...
We study the problem of a quantum particle in an infinite one dimensional potential well with a moving wall. Based on the effective Hamiltonian approach and using the gauge transformation concepts, we show that the effect of the moving wall appears as an extra phase factor in the wave function which depends on the velocity of the wall.
