BACKGROUND Attempts to relate patellar cartilage involvement to anterior knee pain (AKP) have yielded conflicting results. We determined whether the condition of the cartilage of the patella at the time of knee replacement, as assessed by the OARSI score, correlates with postsurgical AKP. PATIENTS AND METHODS We prospectively studied 100 patients undergoing knee arthroplasty. At surgery, we p...
The purpose of this study was to compare the knee extensor mechanics in persons with and without patella alta. Thirteen subjects with patella alta and 14 subjects with normal patellar position participated in the study. Sagittal and axial MR images of the knee were acquired at 0 degrees , 20 degrees , 40 degrees , and 60 degrees of knee flexion. Measurements of actual moment arm, patellar ligam...
The diagnosis of sex and age-at-death from the adult human skeleton is very important in the field of physical and forensic anthropology for the identification of a human body. Three studies of the diagnosis of the patella reporting an accuracy of approximately 85% have been published; however there is no study about diagnosis of the age-at-death on the basis of morphology of the patella. The p...
The authors present a case of a proximal avulsion fracture of the patella two months after a combined proximal and distal realignment operation. Devascularisation of the patella due to the combined technique was considered the main pathogenic factor. Treatment with open reduction and transosseous fixation was successful.
Neglected patella tendon ruptures require reconstruction using tendon grafts. The LARS ligament has been successfully used in cruciate and collateral knee ligament reconstruction. We present a technique using LARS ligament for the reconstruction of a chronic patella tendon rupture in a low-demand patient. The result after 1-year follow-up was deemed successful.
We describe a syndrome combining abnormalities of the pelvis, knee and foot in three related patients with a familial history of small dislocated patellae. The clinical and radiological appearance of the patella and pelvis is consistent with the 'small-patella' syndrome, a rare autosomal dominant disorder. There were also previously unreported deformities affecting the feet.
Congenital patellar syndrome is bilateral isolated absence of patella. Congenital patellar aplasia or hypoplasia associated with genetic disorders belongs to a clinically diverse and genetically heterogeneous group of lower limb malformations. Absence of patella as an isolated anomaly is extremely rare and we discuss such a case in a 9-year-old boy.
