Epidemiological studies around the world point to motor vehicle accidents as being one of the leading causes of death. The objective of our study was to analyze some characteristics of motor vehicle accidents in the region of Herzegovina. The study included 226 patients treated at the Clinic for Surgical Diseases and Urology of the University Clinical Hospital Mostar in 2005. A total of 78.3% o...

The authors reviewed 369 consecutive pedestrian fatalities, which occurred from 1990 to 1994. This represented 28.5% (range 23.3 to 37.2; 95% CI 26% to 31%) of all road accident autopsies during that time. The mean and median ages of this population were 51 (95% CI 48.63 to 53.37) and 54 years, respectively. There were 160 (43.3%) who were in the economically productive ages of 20 to 59 years. ...

Following the implementation of AEB City and AEB Inter-Urban systems in Euro NCAP’s safety rating in 2014, a third type of AEB technology, Autonomous Emergency Braking for Vulnerable Road Users (AEB VRU), will be added to the overall assessment of new vehicles in 2016. The introduction of AEB VRU will be done in two phases where in 2016 AEB Pedestrian is implemented followed by AEB Cyclists in ...

The intelligent vehicle community has devoted considerable efforts to model driver behavior, and in particular to detect and overcome driver distraction in an effort to reduce accidents caused by driver negligence. However, as the domain increasingly shifts towards autonomous and semi-autonomous solutions, the driver is no longer integral to the decision making process, indicating a need to ref...

The unnecessary long cross road waiting times for pedestrians is due to the inefficient traffic light system configuration and has led to the increasing number of traffic accidents involving pedestrians. This research designs, develops, constructs and tests the pedestrian monitoring approach to elevate the efficiency of traffic lights system configuration. This approach consists of two phases w...

Evacuation route planning is one of the most crucial tasks for solving massive evacuation problem. In large public places, pedestrians should be transferred to safe areas when nature or man-made accidents happen. A multi-objective ant colony algorithm for massive pedestrian evacuation is presented in this paper. In the algorithm, three objectives, total evacuation time of all evacuees, total ro...

This study aims at evaluating the current pedestrian lower leg test procedure with respect to the human response in a pedestrian accident. The test procedure is examined for a variety of representative cars of the European fleet. The investigation is purely based on numerical simulations carried out using the regulatory lower leg impactor, as described in the Directive 2004/90/EC, and compared ...

Background: Younger and older pedestrians are both overrepresented in train-pedestrian injury and fatality collision databases. However, scant research has attempted to determine the factors that influence level crossing behaviours for these high risk groups. Method: Five focus groups were undertaken with a total of 27 younger and 17 older pedestrian level crossing users (N = 44). Due to the la...

BACKGROUND Fractures in pediatrics show epidemiological characteristics which are different from fractures in adults. The objective of this study was to examine the injury profiles of open upper extremity fractures (UEFs) in all modes of injury related to road traffic accidents (RTAs) in adult and pediatric hospitalized patients. METHODS Data on 103,465 RTA patients between 1997 and 2013 whos...
