After a ten years planning and construction phase, the ATLAS pixel detector is nearing its completion and is scheduled to be integrated into the ATLAS detector to take data with the first LHC collisions in 2007. An overview of the construction is presented with particular emphasis on some of the major and most recent problems encountered and solved.

Phase noise in the RF master oscillator driving synchrotron oscillations of the beam has been identified as one of the dominant sources of noise in the infrared beamline at the Advanced Light Source. We present measurements of the effect of the electron beam motion in a Fourier transform interferometer (FTIR) detector. This form of detector may be sensitive to very small beam motions.

The CESR/CLEO Phase II interaction region is described. The operational experience with beam-generated detector backgrounds is reviewed. The status of our understanding of beam-generated detector backgrounds at CESR is described and comparisons of background measurements with simulation predictions are presented.
