Abstract Background Insect pests cause substantial agriculture losses annually, and their regulation through chemical pesticides instigates a prolonged detrimental impact on the environment human health. The upsurge in difficulties such as pesticide residue, soil degradation pest resistance acted pacesetter for research biological control with prime focus entomopathogens. To aid knowing biocont...
Third and fourth instar larvae of Aedes aegypti actively ingested entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) their symbiotic bacteria, resulting in larval mortality. All six EPN species evaluated this study were pathogenic to Ae. but varied significantly virulence. Heterorhabditis bacteriophora Steinernema carpocapsae most virulent, H. megidis S. kraussei showed the least virulence, whereas downesi felt...
The nematode-bacterium complex of Heterorhabditis-Photorhabdus is pathogenic to insect larvae. The bacteria undergo a form of phenotypic switching whereby the primary form, at the stationary phase of the growth cycle, makes a range of products and has the capacity to support nematode growth, whereas the secondary form does not express these phenotypes. The work described here investigated the m...
The Colorado potato beetle is an important pest on potato, eggplant, and tomato. Because Colorado potato beetles develop resistance to insecticides quickly, new methods are needed for control. Bacillus thuringiensis is the only bacterium to successfully control Colorado potato beetle. Until recently, one of the drawbacks to testing bacteria against the Colorado potato beetle has been the lack o...
The acquisition of Photorhabdus insect-related (Pir) toxin-like genes in Vibrio parahaemolyticus has been linked to hepatopancreatic necrosis disease in shrimp. We report the whole-genome sequences of genetically virulent and avirulent V. parahaemolyticus isolated from a Malaysian aquaculture pond and show that they represent previously unreported sequence types of V. parahaemolyticus.
Primary and secondary forms of Photorhabdus luminescens Hm and Xenorhabdus nematophilus N2-4 were grown at 18 and 28(deg)C for 24 to 96 h, and we made determinations of the fatty-acid compositions of total lipids and of the fluidity measured by 5-doxyl-stearic acid embedded in liposomes made from total lipids. The levels of the unsaturated fatty acids 16:1 and 18:1 (those with chain lengths of ...
Xenorhabdus luminescens Hm cultured in gelatin broth produced a single extracellular protease. The protease was purified by a factor of 500 and characterized as a monomeric protein with an approximate molecular weight of 61,000. On the basis of inhibitor studies and its pH optimum, the protease was classified as an alkaline metalloprotease with a pH optimum near 8; the isoelectric point of the ...
