As the explosive growth of mobile networks, green mobile networks have been studied extensively. DLNA protocol, widely used in smart home, does not take any consideration for power saving. In this paper, we propose an energy-efficient mechanism for DLNA (E-DLNA), which can achieve balance between QoS provision and energy efficiency. The core network condition estimation algorithm TES used in E-...
This article provides an analytical consideration of transmission control protocol (TCP) characteristics when under the sleep control of passive optical networks (PON) systems. We show that the TCP’s initial throughput growth is delayed by sleep control with a large round trip time (RTT), where the guard time used to make the sleep decision expires before the next packet train arrives. We model...
Sleep scheduling in a wireless sensor network is the process of deciding which nodes are eligible to sleep (enter power-saving mode) after random deployment to conserve energy while retaining network coverage. Most existing approaches toward this problem require sensor’s location information, which may be impractical considering costly locating overheads. This paper proposes range-based sleep s...
The Wi-Fi technology, driven by its tremendous success, is expanding into a wide variety of devices and applications. However, many of these new devices, like handheld devices, pose new challenges in terms of QoS and energy efficiency. In order to address these challenges, in this paper we study how the novel MAC aggregation mechanisms developed in the 802.11n standard can be used to enhance th...
In an effort to reduce the energy consumption of high performance computing centers, a number of new approaches have been developed in the last few years. One of these approaches is to switch hardware to lower power states in promising parallel application phases. A test cluster is designed with high performance computing nodes supporting multiple power saving mechanisms comparable to mobile de...
This paper presents an optimization of the power saving mechanism in the Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) in IEEE 802.11 standard. In the 802.11 power saving mode specified for DCF, time is divided into so-called beacon intervals. At the start of each beacon interval, each node in the power saving mode periodically wakes up for a duration called the ATIM Window. The nodes are required to...
In the IEEE 802.16e system, we propose an efficient power saving mechanism that increases the unavailability interval when the mobile station (MS) uses multiple power saving classes(PSCs). Through the simulation results, we show that the proposed mechanism reduces the power consumption of MSs considerably compared with conventional mechanism.
IEEE 802.16 defines three types of power saving classes for supporting the sleep mode operations on mobile stations using different types of traffic. While related work has developed analytical models to evaluate the performance of the power saving operations in IEEE 802.16 networks, most of these endeavors are limited to the Poisson traffic model and hence their capability is limited in captur...
This study investigates the effects of gender on aggregate saving. We test the hypothesis that shifts in women’s relative income, which can affect their bargaining power within the household, have a discernible impact on household saving and, by extension, gross domestic saving, due to differing saving propensities by gender. The empirical analysis is based on panel data for a set of semi-indus...
