This report is one in a series of volumes that document the Weather and Atmospheric Visualization Effects for Simulation (WAVES) suite of models. Each volume describes an aspect of the series of models. This particular report documents a comparison of the surface-based radiative transport (RT) code Boundary Layer Illumination and Transmission for Simulation (BLITS) with the volumetric RT code f...

The accuracy of numerical weather forecasts is crucial in many engineering applications, especially for the management of renewable energy. In this paper, we give a short overview of methods used to improve local weather forecast. Then we propose a new state space model in order to correct bias and phase errors in numerical wind forecasts. We present some results for real life data.

Powerful software tools are used by the aerospace and power generation communities to check codes for errors. The Software Validation Project at Edge Hill University (http://www.edgehill.ac.uk) in collaboration with SimCon Ltd (http://www.simconglobal.com) has applied these tools to WRF, the most widely used program for modeling climate and weather. Preliminary results have been generated. Alth...

Evolutionary training methods for Artificial Neural Networks can escape local minima. Thus, they are useful to train recurrent neural networks for short-term weather forecasting. However, these algorithms are not guaranteed to converge fast or even converge at all due to their stochastic nature. In this paper, we present an algorithm that uses implicit gradient information and is able to train ...

BACKGROUND Motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of injury mortality. Adverse weather and road conditions have the potential to affect the likelihood of motor vehicle fatalities through several pathways. However, there remains a dearth of assessments associating adverse weather conditions to fatal crashes in the United States. We assessed trends in motor vehicle fatalities associated with a...

Although emotional expressivity figures prominently in several theories of psychological and physical functioning, limitations of currently available measurement techniques impede precise and economical testing of these theories. The 17-item Emotional Expressivity Scale (EES) was designed as a self-report measure of the extent to which people outwardly display their emotions. Reliability studie...

Evapotranspiration (ET) is important to hydrologists as well as regional planners. Methods for the calculation of ET require land use as well as weather and solar energy inputs. In this paper we present an ArcMap toolbar for the calculation of spatially distributed ET from ground based weather data. The toolbar provides functionality to interpolate weather data over the region of interest and c...

Emergency response applications for nuclear or radiological events can be significantly improved via deep feature learning due to the hidden complexity of the data and models involved. In this paper we present a novel methodology for rapid source estimation during radiological releases based on deep feature extraction and weather clustering. Atmospheric dispersions are then calculated based on ...

In this paper, we present the application case of semantic IoT platform technology to WISE project in Korea Meteorological Services. Current M2M platform technology applied to weather service is mainly focused on remote data collection. Therefore, it is difficult to analyze the domain context for decision support and provide the better customized semantic related weather information. In WISE pr...
