PURPOSE Discovery of agents that protect or mitigate normal tissue from radiation injury during radiotherapy, accidents, or terrorist attacks is of importance. Specifically, bone marrow insufficiency, with possible infection due to immunosuppression, can occur after total body irradiation (TBI) or regional irradiation and is a major component of the acute radiation syndrome. The purpose of this...

Background We intend to study the inhibitory effect of sulfur compound in Ramsar hot spring mineral on tumor-genesis ability of high natural background radiation. Objective The radioprotective effect of sulfur compounds was previously shown on radiation-induced chromosomal aberration, micronuclei in mouse bone marrow cells and human peripheral lymphocyte. Ramsar is known for having the highes...

The immunomodulator ammonium trichloro(dioxyethylene-0-0')tellurate (AS101) has previously been found by us to have radioprotective properties when injected into mice before sublethal and lethal doses of irradiation. AS101 also was found to protect mice from hematopoietic damage caused by various chemotherapeutic drugs. Based on these findings, phase II clinical trials with cancer patients trea...

BACKGROUND Fullerene compounds are known to possess antioxidant properties, a common property of chemical radioprotectors. DF-1 is a dendrofullerene nanoparticle with antioxidant properties previously found to be radioprotective in a zebrafish model. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the radioprotective effects of DF-1 in a murine model of lethal total body irradiation and to assess for...

There is a need to develop medical countermeasures to protect first-responders and remediation workers from the biomedical effects of ionizing radiation. Agents that can protect against ionizing radiation and that can be administered before radiation would permit rescue workers to perform needed operations. The ideal radioprotector would be nontoxic and would not degrade performance. Soy phytoe...

The administration of radioprotective compounds is one approach to preventing radiation damage in non-cancerous tissues. Therefore, radioprotective compounds are crucial in clinical radiotherapy. Selenium is a radioprotective compound that has been used in previous clinical studies of radiotherapy. However, evidence regarding the effectiveness of selenium in radiotherapy and the mechanisms unde...

The radioprotective agent WR-2721 was examined for its effects on modifying the cytotoxicity of HN2 against normal and tumor cells in the AKR mouse. Quantitation was carried out by the spleen colony assay for both normal hematopoietic stem cells and AKR leukemia cells. Protection from drug toxicity and normal cell cytotoxicity was noted. Potentiation of cytotoxicity to AKR leukemia was found.
