In a meta-analysis, it is important to specify a model that adequately describes the effect-size distribution of the underlying population of studies. The conventional normal fixed-effect and normal random-effects models assume a normal effect-size population distribution, conditionally on parameters and covariates. For estimating the mean overall effect size, such models may be adequate, but f...

How realistic is it to adopt a quantum random walk model to account for decisions involving two choices? Here, we discuss the neural plausibility and the effect of initial state and boundary thresholds on such a model and contrast it with various features of the classical random walk model of decision making.

• ORA vs. B>1 indicates a higher response rate in favour of treatment A. • The DIC (Deviance Information Criterion) is commonly used to select fixed vs. random effects model • DIC represents a trade-off between model adequacy and complexity (i.e. complex models, for example a random effect vs a fixed effect model, are penalised) • The model associated with the lowest DIC is selected, considerin...

This paper presents all simple (i.e., not linked) static fault models that have been shown to exist for Random Access Memories (RAMs), and shows that none of the current industrial march tests has the capability to detect all these faults. It therefore introduces a new test (March SS), with a test length of 22n, that detects all realistic simple static faults in RAMs.

Variance ratios were estimated for random within-herd effects of age at test day and lactation stage, on test-day yield and somatic cell score to determine whether including these effects would improve the accuracy of estimation. Test-day data starting with 1990 calvings for the entire US Jersey population and Holsteins from California, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Texas were analyzed. Test-day...

AIMS The uncertainty surrounding safety of angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) increased after publication of experimental and clinical studies which suggested an excess risk of myocardial infarction (MI) in people treated with ARBs. METHODS AND RESULTS We performed a meta-analysis of randomised clinical trials, which compared ARBs with either a placebo or active drugs different from ARBs. O...

This paper presents a novel tissue proliferation model of extraneuronal filaceous material consisting of accumulation of the amyloid beta-proteins. Proposed model is constructed using a 3-D Gaussian Hidden Markov Random Field obtained from fluorescent microscopy measurements.

A common analysis objective is estimation of a realized random effect. The parameter underlying such an effect is usually defined as an average response of a realized unit, such as a cluster mean, domain mean, small area mean, or subject effect. The effects are called random effects since their occurrence is the result of some (actual or assumed) random sampling process. In mixed models, random...
