Eight novel quinolones with anti-Helicobacter pylori activity were isolated from the actinomycete Pseudonocardia sp. CL38489. The quinolones were very potent against H. pylori with MICs up to 0.1 ng/ml. The quinolones appear to be specific for H. pylori, since they did not show antimicrobial activity when tested against a panel of other microorganisms.

We report here the draft genome sequence of Leifsonia sp. strain NCR5, a Gram-positive actinomycete isolated from Carpobrotus rossii (Haw.) Schwantes rhizosphere. The de novo genome of Leifsonia sp. strain NCR5 was assembled with 69 scaffolds and a G+C content of 69%, was 4.2 Mb in length, and contained 3,952 coding sequences.

A new antibiotic, luminamicin, was isolated from the culture broth of an actinomycete strain OMR-59. It exhibits antibacterial activity against anaerobic bacteria, especially against Clostridium sp. The molecular formula of the antibiotic was determined as C32H38O12 on the basis of high resolution mass spectrum, elemental analysis and NMR spectrum.

An efficient restriction barrier for methylated DNA in the actinomycete Amycolatopsis methanolica could be avoided by using a nonmethylating Escherichia coli strain for DNA isolations. Two novel, isomeric compounds, coumamidines gamma 1 and gamma 2, were isolated from fermentations of an actinomycete. The structures were elucidated spectroscopically using 2D NMR correlation experiments and mass spectral data. The coumamidines were found to be close structural relatives of the cinodines (LL-BM123 gamma 1 and gamma 2).
