A case of sudden onset of severe respiratory distress is reported. Appropriate clinical and roentgenologic findings suggested foreign body aspiration. The foreign body was removed by fiberoptic rigid bronchoscope. Bronchoscopic, histopathologic, and microbiologic findings revealed that the foreign body was a granulomatous mass originating from endobronchial tuberculosis.

acidic ph of stomach, which is a normal physiological barrier against bacterial overgrowth, would increase by stress ulcer prophylaxis initiation and may lead to bacterial colonization and play as a source for infection transmission to the respiratory system which results in ventilator related pneumonia in patients admitted to the intensive care units (icus). therefore, finding methods to decre...

A patient with systemic sclerosis developed recurrent dysphagia consistently localised to the pharyngo-oesophageal region. This was due to narrowing of the lumen as a result of gross thickening of the pharyngo-oesophageal muscles. Histologically the changes were typical of systemic sclerosis. The lower oesophagus was less involved. Eventually she died of aspiration pneumonia and respiratory arr...

Serratia ficaria was isolated from sputum in a 62-year-old man and from tracheal aspiration fluid in a 62-year-old woman with acute respiratory distress. These strains are the second and third isolations of S. ficaria from human sources. The case reports are presented, together with the laboratory findings and the biochemical activities of the isolates.

We report 2 cases of neonatal Legionella infection associated with aspiration of contaminated water used in hospitals to make infant formula. The molecular profiles of Legionella strains isolated from samples from the infants and from water dispensers were indistinguishable. Our report highlights the need to consider nosocomial legionellosis among neonates who have respiratory symptoms.

The objective of the study was to develop a scintigraphic method for measurement of airway mucociliary clearance in small laboratory rodents such as the mouse. Previous investigations have characterized the secretory cell types present in the mouse airway, but analysis of the mucus transport system has been limited to in vitro examination of tissue explants or invasive in vivo measures of a sin...

Meconium aspiration syndrome (MAS) is a complex respiratory disease of the term and near-term neonate. Inhalation of meconium causes airway obstruction, atelectasis, epithelial injury, surfactant inhibition, and pulmonary hypertension, the chief clinical manifestations of which are hypoxaemia and poor lung compliance. Supplemental oxygen is the mainstay of therapy for MAS, with around one-third...

We present the fingings in a patient with acute thermal burn to the upper and lower airway who developed mucosal edema followed by patchy areas of granuloma-like lesions in the trachea and bronchi. A four-month follow-up showed resolution of the gross lesions, but functional alterations remained. This patient illustrates the necessity for repeated direct observation and functional evaluation of...

Extraosseous accumulation of technetium-99m-methyl diphosphonate (99mTc-MDP) on bone scan is not common. This phenomenon is often attributed to abnormality of calcium metabolism and has been reported in a variety of conditions including metabolic diseases and malignancies. A five years old boy is presented here, who was admitted to the pediatric emergency suffering from fatigue, respiratory sym...
