This tick, originally referred to as Rhipicephalus species III by Yeoman & Walker (1967), was first collected from a sitatunga, Tragelaphus spekei, and then occasionally from cattle, in Tanzania. Further collections, mostly from sitatunga, have since been seen from Uganda and Zambia. Descriptions of the adults of this species are given, together with information on their hosts and their distrib...

Dermacentor nuttallii from Siberia, Rhipicephalus sanguineus from Crimea, and Rh. pumilio from the Astrakhan region were infected with Rickettsia sibirica (12%), R. conorii (8%), and the Astrakhan fever agent (3%), respectively. Three new Rickettsiae of the R. massiliae genogroup were identified in ticks by 16S rDNA, gltA, and ompA sequencing.

The life cycle of Rhipicephalus evertsi evertsi Neumann, 1897, is discussed under the following headings: larval feeding; larval drop; nymphal feeding; nymphal drop; nymphal moulting; adult feeding; adult drop; preoviposition period; oviposition period and incubation. Special attention has also been given to the development of both male and female reproductive organs, gametogensis and mating.

Six genera and 27 species of hard ticks (Ixodidae) currently are recognized in the United States east of the Mississippi River as follows: Amblyomma (4 species), Boophilus (1), Dermacentor (3), Haemaphysalis (2), Ixodes (16), and Rhipicephalus (1). We present a diagrammatic couplet key to the adults of the six genera and 27 species of Ixodidae found in the eastern portion of the United States.

Rickettsia conorii, a spotted fever group rickettsia which is transmitted by Rhipicephalus sp. complex ticks, was considered until now the only pathogenic rickettsia prevalent in Greece. Here, we report the presence of "Rickettsia mongolotimonae" (proposed name) detected simultaneously in a patient and in a Hyalomma anatolicum excavatum tick, sampled on the patient.

We report the first isolation of Rickettsia sibirica (strain mongolotimonae) from the blood of a patient and detection by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of the rickettsia in a Rhipicephalus pusillus tick collected from a dead mongoose (Herpestes ichneumon) in the Alentejo region, Portugal. We describe also the first PCR detection of a new Rickettsia strain that is related to R. sibirica.

Major differences were observed in hexane, ethanol and butanol extracts of eggs obtained from Rhipicephalus evertsi evertsi females in which the porose areas functioned normally (AP+ eggs) and from R. evertsi evertsi in which the porose areas were selectively destroyed by electrocautery (AP- eggs). Mass yields and UV spectra of the hexane extracts were similar for AP+ and AP- eggs. The UV spect...
