We present a new model-based approach for an automated labeling and segmentation of the rib cage in chest CT scans. A mean rib cage model including a complete vertebral column is created out of 29 data sets. We developed a ray search based procedure for rib cage detection and initial model pose. After positioning the model, it was adapted to 18 unseen CT data. In 16 out of 18 data sets, detecti...

UNLABELLED We present a case report and review of literature about slipping rib syndrome, a syndrome rarely recognized and often un or misdiagnosed. In literature there is no clear consensus about the diagnosis and treatment. We present a case of a 47 year old man who was diagnosed with slipping rib syndrome after a cycling incident 8 years ago. Also, we developed a flow chart according the dia...

In order to obtain an accurate result of the heat transfer of the rib in the internal cooling Rectangular channel, using separation of variables, analytical solutions of three dimensional steady-state heat conduction in rectangular ribs are given by solving three dimensional steady-state function of the rectangular ribs. Therefore, we can get solution of three dimensional temperature field in t...

Two older adults presented to the emergency department with rib fractures following minor trauma. Both were discharged on oral analgesics and died within 2 days. Rib fractures more often lead to adverse outcomes in older adults. Emergency physicians should consider admitting any such patient who presents with two or more rib fractures.

BACKGROUND Cerebellar and cerebral infarctions caused by the syndrome of cervical rib with thrombosis of subclavian artery are very unusual. CASE PRESENTATION We report the case of a 49-year-old male patient with a right cervical rib compression leading to subclavian arterial thrombosis and both cerebellar and cerebral infarctions secondary to retrograde thromboembolisation. Follow-up imaging...

The automatic detection and quantification of skeletal structures has a variety of applications for biological research. This paper proposes an automatic solution for rib segmentation and counting based on structural properties of ribs in mouse X-ray images. The solution consists of five stages, including alignment, cropping the region of interest, image enhancement, rib segmentation, filtering...

BACKGROUND To evaluate the incidence of chest wall toxicity after lung stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR) and identify risk factors for the development of rib fracture. METHODS Thirty-nine patients with 49 lesions underwent SABR for primary or metastatic lung tumors using Cyberknife® with tumor tracking systems. Patient characteristics, treatment factors and variables obtained from dos...

Shell structures are extensively used in engineering due to their efficient load-carrying capacity relative to material volume. However, large-span shells require additional supporting structures to strengthen fragile regions. The problem of designing optimal stiffeners is therefore becoming a major challenge for shell applications. To address it, we propose a computational framework to design ...
