Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), a layered semiconducting material in transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), as thin as a monolayer (consisting of a hexagonal plane of Mo atoms covalently bonded and sandwiched between two planes of S atoms, in a trigonal prismatic structure), has demonstrated unique properties and strong promises for emerging two-dimensional (2D) nanodevices. Here we report on t...

Herein we describe our work toward an efficient solar cell made in its entirety with carbon based materials. The different arrangements and combinations in which carbon can exist produce a wide variety of compounds that have unique physical, chemical and electrical properties. Some of these allotropes behave as conductors while others are classified as semiconducting. Our efforts focus on takin...

In the field of electronic gas sensing, low-dimensional semiconductors such as single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) can offer high detection sensitivity owing to their unprecedentedly large surface-to-volume ratio. The sensitivity and responsivity can further improve by increasing their areal density. Here, an accelerated gas adsorption is demonstrated by exploiting volumetric effects via di...

We have investigated the electrical and optical properties of the deep levels responsible for the 1.4–1.5 eV luminescence band usually observed in II–VI compounds. We compared the energy levels found by cathodoluminescence and junction spectroscopy methods for semi-insulating ~CdTe:Cl and Cd0.8Zn0.2Te! and semiconducting samples ~undoped CdTe!. The techniques utilized were deep level transient ...

Integration of organic/inorganic hybrid perovskites with metallic or semiconducting phases of 2D MoS2 nanosheets via solution processing is demonstrated. The results show that the collection of charge carriers is strongly dependent on the electronic properties of the 2D MoS2 with metallic MoS2 showing high responsivity and the semiconducting phase exhibiting high on/off ratios.

We develop an analytically solvable model able to qualitatively explain nonhydrogenicexciton spectra observed recently in two-dimensional (20) semiconducting transition-metal dichalcogenides. Our exciton Hamiltonian explicitly includes additional angular momentum associated with the pseudospin degree of freedom unavoidable in 20 semiconducting materials with honeycomb structure. We claim that t...

We have examined the time-dependent effect of the titanium oxide photocatalysis on N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone individually dispersed single walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) suspensions. From optical spectroscopic studies, we found a selective decoration of the semiconducting tubes. Such selectivity is attributed to the preferential attack of the photogenerated active species on the hole-doped semicond...

Recently, zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowires have drawn major interest because of their semiconducting nature and unique optical and piezoelectric properties. Various applications for ZnO nanowires have been conceived, including the next generation of field effect transistors, light emitting diodes, sensors and resonators. ZnO nanowires are also envisioned as nanogenerators by exploiting the coupling o...

Advanced molecular materials that combine two or more physical properties are typically constructed by combining different molecules, each being responsible for one of the properties required. Ideally, single molecules could take care of this combined functionality, provided they are self-assembled correctly and endowed with different functional subunits whose strong electronic coupling may lea...

Semiconducting-superconducting nanowires attract widespread interest owing to the possible presence of non-abelian Majorana zero modes, which hold promise for topological quantum computation. However, search signatures is challenging because reproducible hybrid devices with desired nanowire lengths and material parameters need be reliably fabricated perform systematic explorations in gate volta...
