A parabolic starlike function f of order ρ in the unit disk is characterized by the fact that the quantity z f ′(z)/ f (z) lies in a given parabolic region in the right half-plane. Denote the class of such functions by PS∗(ρ). This class is contained in the larger class of starlike functions of order ρ. Subordination results for PS∗(ρ) are established, which yield sharp growth, covering, and di...
We consider a strictly hyperbolic, genuinely nonlinear system of conservation laws in one space dimension. A sharp decay estimate is proved for the positive waves in an entropy weak solution. The result is stated in terms of a partial ordering among positive measures, using symmetric rearrangements and a comparison with a solution of Burgers’ equation with impulsive sources. 1 Introduction Cons...

Here we adapt the argument of Wolff to also handle subsets of “elliptic surfaces” such as paraboloids. Except for an endpoint, this answers a conjecture of Machedon and Klainerman, and also improves upon th...
We compute the second order correction for the cover time of the binary tree of depth n by (continuous-time) random walk, and show that with probability approaching 1 as n increases, √ τcov = √ |E|[ √ 2 log 2 ·n− logn/ √ 2 log 2+O((log logn)], thus showing that the second order correction differs from the corresponding one for the maximum of the Gaussian free field on the tree.
We prove a sharp Hölder estimate for solutions of linear two-dimensional, divergence form elliptic equations with measurable coefficients, such that the matrix of the coefficients is symmetric and has unit determinant. Our result extends some previous work by Piccinini and Spagnolo [7]. The proof relies on a sharp Wirtinger type inequality.
We report an error estimate of the multi-dimensional fast Gauss transform (FGT), which is much sharper than that previously reported in the literature. An application to the Karhunen–Loeve decomposition in the three-dimensional physical space is also presented that shows savings of three orders of magnitude in time and memory compared to a direct solver. 2006 Elsevier Inc. Let B = {Bt)t>0 be a standard Brownian motion. For c > 0, k > 0 , let T(c, k) = inî{t > 0: maxs<í Bs cBt > k} , T"(c,k)= inf{r>0: max^, \BS\ c\B,\ > k} . We show that for c > 0 and k > 0, both T(c, k) and T*{c, k) axe finite almost everywhere. Moreover, T(c, k) and T*(c, k) e L if and only if c < pKp 1) for p > 1 , and for all c > 0 when p < 1 . These results have analogues for simple random wa...
