We report here a complete genome sequence of Ebola virus Makona from a nonfatal patient sample that originated in Sierra Leone during the last Ebola virus outbreak in West Africa (species Zaire ebolavirus) using a highly accurate circle sequencing (Cir-seq) method.
This wireless sensor technology, currently being field-tested in an Ebola Treatment Unit in Sierra Leone, monitors multiple vital signs continuously and remotely. When connected with enhanced analytics software, it can discern changes in patients’ status much more quickly and intelligently than conventional periodic monitoring, thus saving critical health care worker time and reducing exposure ...
The complete genome sequence of a peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV) from goat samples collected in Sierra Leone in 2011 is reported here. The genome shows a higher nucleotide sequence identity (98.9%) with a lineage II PPRV from Senegal than to PPRVs from neighboring Liberia and Ivory Coast.
This unpublished symposium paper presents ideas on possible uses of colonoware inspired by ethnoarchaeological research in Sierra Leone in 1991 and 1993. An earlier version of this paper was presented in the Symposium Can't We Just Throw It Away? Approaches to Plain Pottery.
More than 99% of maternal deaths occur in low-resource settings; in parts of the developing world, as many as one in six women die of maternal causes. Currently, seven developing countries-Afghanistan, Angola, Malawi, Niger, Rwanda, Sierra Leone and Tanzania-have maternal mortality ratios of at least 1,400 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births.

A serosurvey of anti-Ebola Zaire virus nucleoprotein IgG prevalence was carried out among Ebola virus disease survivors and their Community Contacts in Bombali District, Sierra Leone. Our data suggest that the specie of Ebola virus (Zaire) responsible of the 2013-2016 epidemic in West Africa may cause mild or asymptomatic infection in a proportion of cases, possibly due to an efficient immune r...
Since March 10, 2014, Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone have experienced the largest known Ebola virus disease (Ebola) epidemic with approximately 13,000 persons infected as of October 28, 2014. Before September 25, 2014, only four patients with Ebola had been treated in the United States; all of these patients had been diagnosed in West Africa and medically evacuated to the United States for c...
Patients with febrile illnesses presenting to an Ebola treatment unit in Sierra Leone had a wide range of diagnoses other than Ebola virus disease. Rapid diagnostic tests were useful in confirming these diagnoses, reducing the length of patient stay with valuable consequences. These alternative diagnoses should assist in future planning.
We collected data on 1054 children admitted to Ebola Holding Units in Sierra Leone and describe outcomes of 697/1054 children testing negative for Ebola virus disease (EVD) and accompanying caregivers. Case-fatality was 9%; 3/630 (0.5%) children discharged testing negative were readmitted EVD-positive. Nosocomial EVD transmission risk may be lower than feared.
