Pseudomonas mosselii Gil3 was isolated from a catfish that survived from lethal challenge with hypervirulent Aeromonas hydrophila (vAh). When assayed in vitro, the bacterium showed antagonism against vAh. Sequence analysis revealed that the genome of P. mosselii Gil3 encodes numerous aromatic metabolism pathways and proteins for biosynthesis of antimicrobial compounds.

The demand for farm-raised channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) has grown tremendously in recent years due to year round availability, consistent quality, and healthy attributes of catfish. In 1993, over 459 million tons of catfish were produced in the United States (Anon., 1994). As this industry has grown, so has the amount of offal, trimmings, and other solid waste generated and the need to...

We examined the mandibles of 377 individuals representing 25 species, 12 genera, 5 tribes, and 2 subfamilies of the Loricariidae, a species-rich radiation of detritivorous-herbivorous neotropical freshwater fishes distinguished by having a ventral oral disk and jaws specialized for surface attachment and benthic feeding. Loricariid mandibles are transversely oriented and bilaterally independent...

The demand for fish for food, recreation, and ornamental aquariums is steadily increasing. Natural fish populations have declined during the last several decades because of environmental degradation and over-fishing. This has resulted in an increased effort in the development of techniques for hatchery production of fish. Traditional aquaculture species such as trout, catfish, common carp, gold...

Scaling effects on the kinematics of suction feeding in fish remain poorly understood, at least partly because of the inconsistency of the results of the existing experimental studies. Suction feeding is mechanically distinct from most other type of movements in that negative pressure inside the buccal cavity is thought to be the most important speed-limiting factor during suction. However, how...

The madamango sea catfish, Cathorops spixii (Siluriformes: Ariidae), is often among the most abundant fishes on the South American Atlantic coast. In the present study, conducted in shallow, non-estuarine coastal areas of Caraguatatuba Bight in southeastern Brazil, collections of this species, the most abundant member of the ichthyofauna, included primarily medium-sized individuals, indicating ...

TWO MAIN QUESTIONS arise naturally in the study of neural systems: “What does the system do?” and its logical companion and sequel, “How does the system do this?” Answering the first question involves the ability to predict the system response to any stimulus, and it is therefore usually carried out through the performance of suitable stimulus-response experiments. As this endeavor is directed ...

Although the Vietnamese catfish farming has grown at very high rates in recent years, the industry has also faced many problems affecting its sustainability. This paper studies the perceptions of catfish farmers regarding risk and risk management strategies in their production activities. Specifically, the study aims to measure the consequences, likelihoods, and levels of risks as well as the e...

The endocrine disrupting substances represent major challenge to aquaculture and the most widespread one is 4-nonylphenol (4-NP). Pyrazole possess an interesting broad spectrum of pharmacological actions. Therefore, this study was designed to investigate the therapeutic potential of five novel thieno [2,3-c] pyrazole compounds in African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) on the hematotoxic and elect...

Intercontinental distributions in the southern hemisphere can either be the result of Gondwanan vicariance or more recent transoceanic dispersal. Transoceanic dispersal has come into vogue for explaining many intercontinental distributions; however, it has been used mainly for organisms that can float or raft between the continents. Despite their name, the Sea Catfishes (Ariidae) have limited d...
