This paper studies a discrete-time single-server queue with two independent inputs and service interruptions. One of the inputs to the queue is an independent and identically distributed process. The other is a much more general process and it is not required to be Markov nor is it required to be stationary. The service interruption process is also general and it is not required to be Markov or...

Join the Shortest Queue (JSQ) is a popular routing policy for server farms. However, until now all analysis of JSQ has been limited to First-Come-First-Serve (FCFS) server farms, whereas it is known that web server farms are better modeled as Processor Sharing (PS) server farms. We provide the first approximate analysis of JSQ in the PS server farm model for general job size distributions, obta...

In this paper we consider a single-server, cyclic polling system with switch-over times and Poisson arrivals. The service disciplines that are discussed, are exhaustive and gated service. The novel contribution of the present paper is that we consider the reneging of customers at polling instants. In more detail, whenever the server starts or ends a visit to a queue, some of the customers waiti...

Lin & Kumar [2] introduced a control model with a single queue and two heterogeneous servers. They showed, using policy iteration, that the slower server should only be used if the queue length is above a certain level, i.e., the optimal policy is of threshold type. In this note we give a simple iterative proof of this result. AMS Subject Classification (1991): 90B22, 90C40

We establish the optimal asymptotic decay rate of per-session queue length tail distributions for a two-queue system where a single constant rate server serves the two queues using the Generalized Processor Sharing (GPS) scheduling discipline. The result is obtained using the sample-path large deviation principle and has implications in call admission control for high-speed communication networks.

 Abstract—This paper considers a Geo/G/1 queue, in which the server operates a single vacation at end of each consecutive service period. After all the customers in the system are served exhaustively, the server immediately leaves for a vacation. Upon returning from the vacation, the server inspects the queue length. If there are customers waiting in the queue, the server either resumes servin...

We view each station in a Jackson network as a queue of tasks, of a particular type, which are to be processed by the associated specialized server. A complete pooling of queues, into a single queue, and servers, into a single server, gives rise to an M/PH/1 queue, where the server is flexible in the sense that it processes all tasks. We assess the value of complete pooling by comparing the ste...

The so-called “Israeli queue” (Boxma et al. in Stoch Model 24(4):604– 625, 2008; Perel and Yechiali in Probab Eng Inf Sci, 2013; Perel and Yechiali in Stoch Model 29(3):353–379, 2013) is a multi-queue polling-type system with a single server. Service is given in batches, where the batch sizes are unlimited and the service time of a batch does not depend on its size. After completing service, th...

This paper studies the single server repairable queueing system with variable service rate and failure rate. The rule of variation is that changes when number customers in reaches a certain value. may fail at any time, rates idle periods busy are different. has one reliable repairman to repair server. steady-state joint distribution states obtained by matrix geometric solution method, availabil...

Consider a 2-stage single-server tandem queue with a MAP to the first stage and the exponential service times. Using the DREB scheme, we formulate the joint queue length process into a single-dimensional level-dependent quasi-birth-death (LDQBD) process with expanding blocks. This allows us to show that the departure process from stage 1 is a MAP with infinite phases or IMAP and that the depart...
