This paper describes an Artificial Life system for music composition. An evolving ecology of sonic entities populate a virtual world and compete for limited resources. Part of their genetic representation permits the creatures to make and listen to sounds. Complex musical and sonic relationships can develop as the creatures use sound to aid in their survival and mating prospects.

Beginner’s Mind is the newest work in the ongoing Sonic Improvisation Series. This performance system is a combination of software and hardware designed for real-time sonic exploration. This paper will describe the primary design strategies employed in this system, and discuss key aesthetic concerns.

AUDIO ORIENTEERING is a collaborative performance environment in which physical tokens are used to navigate an invisible sonic landscape. Centrifugally purified samples of tobacco mosaic virus were subjected to intense sound vibrations of 9,000 cycles per second for 0, 2, 8, 16, 32, and 64 minutes. The viscosity and stream birefringence of the samples decreased with time of sonic treatment, but no chemical changes were found. A fascination for models derived from natural organisation of organisms has a long history of influence in the arts. This paper discusses emergence as a complex behaviour and its manifestations in the sonic domain. We address issues inherent in the use of visual/spatial metaphors for sonic representation and propose an approach based on sound interaction within biological complex systems.
