Neutrino physics has entered an era of precision measurements. With these precise measurements, we may be able to distinguish different models that have been constructed to explain the small neutrino masses and the large mixing among them. In this talk, I review some of the existing theoretical models and their predictions for neutrino oscillations.

We report an experimental study of atomic motion in the Bloch band of a periodic potential. Our system consists of cold sodium atoms in a far detuned standing wave of near resonant light. We prepare the atoms in the lowest motional band, and then impose phase modulation in order to drive interband transitions. We observe Rabi oscillations between the first and second band as a function of modul...

In the recent years neutrino experiments have studied in detail the phenomenon of neutrino oscillations and most of the oscillation parameters have been measured with a good accuracy. However, in spite of many interesting ideas, the problem of flavor in the lepton sector remains an open issue. In this review, we discuss the state of the art of models for neutrino masses and mixing formulated in...

A coupled ocean-atmosphere data assimilation procedure yields improved forecasts of El Niño for the 1980s compared with previous forecasting procedures. As in earlier forecasts with the same model, no oceanic data were used, and only wind information was assimilated. The improvement is attributed to the explicit consideration of air-sea interaction in the initialization. These results suggest t...

A brief review of neutrino anomalies in particle physics and of the role played by neutrinos in cosmology and astrophysics is presented. The main part of the talk is dedicated to the impact of neutrinos and in particular of neutrino oscillations on BBN and to a possible spatial variation of primordial abundances.

This research examined the content of articles about Brazil in The New York Times and El País and the correlation between news coverage and students’ knowledge and opinion levels on current events in Brazil. Content analysis revealed that American news coverage of Brazil in The New York Times had more depth and breadth than Spanish coverage in El País. Questionnaires distributed to University o...

BACKGROUND Dengue is a major global public health problem with increasing incidence and geographic spread. The epidemiology is complex with long inter-epidemic intervals and endemic with seasonal fluctuations. This study was initiated to investigate dengue transmission dynamics in Binh Thuan province, southern Vietnam. METHODOLOGY Wavelet analyses were performed on time series of monthly noti...

[1] Using a new reanalysis data set, the seasonal cycle of the midlatitude tropospheric static stability is examined. Dry and moist static stability measures are analyzed as a function of latitude, longitude, and season. It is shown that in both the Northern (NH) and Southern Hemispheres (SH), dry and moist static stability averaged over the midlatitudes maximizes in December–February. Examinin...

Snow accumulation measured during 1982-1983 on the Quelccaya ice cap, Peru, was 70 percent of the average from 1975 through 1983. Inspection of 19 years (1964 through 1983) of accumulation measured near the summit of Quelccaya reveals a substantial decrease ( approximately 30 percent) in association with the last five El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) occurrences in the equatorial Pacific. Th...
