The diagnosis of Norwegian scabies was missed for a year for an elderly long-term-care facility resident. Serpiginous tracks were noted on the surface of Sabouraud dextrose agar used for fungal culture of the skin scrapings. This unusual laboratory manifestation must alert clinical microbiologists to the possible diagnosis of scabies.

BACKGROUND Pruritic scabies lesions caused by Sarcoptes scabiei burrowing in the stratum corneum of human skin facilitate opportunistic bacterial infections. Emerging resistance to current therapeutics emphasizes the need to identify novel targets for protective intervention. We have characterized several protein families located in the mite gut as crucial factors for host-parasite interactions...

During seven years, our research group conducted a big and multicenter study on comparing different medications with different dosage in the treatment of scabies. This study led to multiple publications in high impact peer reviewed journals. There were some minor errors in the releasing of study results that I want to point out in this letter. In the Alipour et al. [1] study none of 420 patient...

Scabies is a major threat to the well being of mountain-dwelling Bovid hosts, Rupicapra rupicapra and Rupicapra pyrenaica. Severe outbreaks are in progress over a significant part of their distribution area and resource managers demand improved methods to monitor, analyse and possibly forecast the spread and effects of scabies at the population level. An amplified capture enzyme-linked immunoso...

Bullous scabies is a rare disease that is usually diagnosed in elderly patients. The clinical, histological, and immunological findings are identical to bullous pemphigoid. In a review of the literature, we found reports of 24 cases. We present a new case of bullous scabies in a 72-year-old man. The lesions responded to treatment with oral ivermectin.

Norwegian scabies is a rare skin infestation by the mite Sarcoptes scabei var hominis. This condition typically presents with widespread, crusted lesions associated with hyperkeratotic scales. The elderly, the debilitated, and patients who are immunocompromised are at risk for this more severe form of scabies. The authors discuss the presentation, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of this der...

BACKGROUND On a global scale scabies is one of the most common dermatological conditions, imposing a considerable economic burden on individuals, communities and health systems. There is substantial epidemiological evidence that in tropical regions scabies is often causing pyoderma and subsequently serious illness due to invasion by opportunistic bacteria. The health burden due to complicated s...
