The activity of omadacycline and comparators when tested against a subset of Streptococcus pneumoniae from US and European regions of a 2014 global surveillance program (304 isolates) are reported. These MIC results were compared to those obtained when testing S. pneumoniae from 2010 surveillance (1,834 isolates). The omadacycline MIC50/90 for S. pneumoniae (2014) was 0.06/0.06μg/mL, similar to...

A total of 210 Salmonella isolates, representing 64 different serovars, were isolated from imported seafood samples, and 55/210 isolates were found to be resistant to at least one antibiotic. Class 1 integrons from three multidrug-resistant Salmonella enterica strains (Salmonella enterica serovars Newport [strain 62], Typhimurium var. Copenhagen [strain 629], and Lansing [strain 803], originati...

Melioidosis (infection caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei) requires a prolonged course of oral antibiotics following initial intravenous therapy to reduce the risk of relapse after cessation of treatment. The current recommendation is a four-drug regimen (trimethoprim [TMP], sulfamethoxazole [SMX], doxycycline, and chloramphenicol) and a total treatment time of 12 to 20 weeks. Drug side effect...

Mastitis is the most frequent and costly disease of lactating animals and is associated with a significant reduction in milk yield, increased cost and culling. Early and specific antibiotic based treatment reduces the severity of the disease. Over the years the extensive use of antimicrobials has led to increase antimicrobial resistance. The present study was designed to investigate the prevale...

Most recent cases of staphylococcal osteomyelitis seen at Mulago Hospital, Kampala, have been due to penicillin-resistant organisms. Six severely ill patients-four with multiple bone lesions-were treated with trimethoprim-sulphamethoxazole; the response was prompt and satisfactory in all cases.

Infectious Diseases Society of America guidelines state that uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs) should be treated empirically with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMZ), unless the community resistance among uropathogens exceeds 10%-20%, in which case a fluoroquinolone (FQ) should be used. However, the data to support this threshold are limited. We performed a cost-minimization and...

The recent increase in some parts of London of syphilis acquired homosexually (Lancet, 1964; Brit. med. J7., 1967) has indicated that a drug of nontreponemicidal properties is to be preferred in the treatment of gonococcal proctitis in homosexual men. Septrin was considered as a potentially useful remedy in these circumstances. Though taken orally and so subject to error or misuse, it needs be ...

The persistence of Vibrio cholerae, biotype el tor, in a patient treated with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole was due to the acquisition of a conjugative resistance plasmid. The plasmid, with a molecular size of 72 megadaltons, belonged to incompatibility group 6-C and conferred resistance to ampicillin, chloramphenicol, sulfonamide, and trimethoprim.

There are few reports of invasive infections caused by Brevundimonas vesicularis. We report two cases of B. vesicularis bacteremia confirmed by culture and 16S rRNA sequence analysis with highly variable sensitivity to broad-spectrum antibiotics. Initial empiric therapy with anti-pseudomonal antibiotics plus trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole for hospital-acquired B. vesicularis infections should be...

Long-term low-dosage prophylaxis may be used in children with recurrent urinary tract infection to prevent reinfection of the urinary tract while the underlying cause of infection persists. Co-trimoxazole in a dose of 2 mg trimethoprin combined with 10 mg sulphamethoxazole per kg body weight daily has proved very effective: only six of 130 children receiving this treatment during a total period...
