The solid-liquid interface reaction between phosphate rock (PR) and metals (Pb, Cu, and Zn) was studied. Phosphate rock has the highest affinity for Pb, followed by Cu and Zn, with sorption capacities of 138, 114, and 83.2 mmol/kg PR, respectively. In the Pb-Cu-Zn ternary system, competitive metal sorption occurred with sorption capacity reduction of 15.2%, 48.3%, and 75.6% for Pb, Cu, and Zn, ...
Biosorption is a relatively new process that has proven very promising in the removal of contaminants from aqueous effluents. Microorganisms as well as plantand animalderived materials have been used as biosorbents by many researchers. Biomaterial immobilization and chemical modification improves the adsorption capacity and stability of biosorbents. Biosorption experiments over Cu(II), Cd(II), ...
The influence of the ligand/metal ion concentration ratio on the shape, peak current and peak potential of curves obtained by anodic stripping voltammetry (a.s.v.) at the hanging mercury drop electrode is described, particularly with respect to the use of a.s.v. for speciation of metal ions at very low concentrations as is often found in natural waters. The lead(II)/triethylenetetramine system ...
Dissolved organic matter (DOM) in surface waters affects the fate and environmental effects of trace metals. We measured variability in the Cd, Cu, Ni, and Zn affinity of 23 DOM samples isolated by reverse osmosis from freshwaters in natural, agricultural, and urban areas. Affinities at uniform pH and ionic composition were assayed at low, environmentally relevant free Cd, Cu, Ni, and Zn activi...
the dependence on ionic strength of protonation of glycine and its complexation with dioxouranium (vi) is reported in sodium perchlorate and sodium chloride solutions as background salts. the measurements have been performed at 25±0.1°c and various ionic strengths in the range 0.1 to 1.0 mol , using a combination of potentiometric and spectrophotometric techniques. the overall analysis of the ...
[1] In the 300 Area of a U(VI)-contaminated aquifer at Hanford, Washington, USA, inorganic carbon and major cations, which have large impacts on U(VI) transport, change on an hourly and seasonal basis near the Columbia River. Batch and column experiments were conducted to investigate the factors controlling U(VI) adsorption/desorption by changing chemical conditions over time. Low alkalinity an...
This article reviews recent progress in the development of ferrocene (Fc)-modified thin films and nanoparticles in relation to their biosensor applications. Redox-active materials in enzyme biosensors commonly use Fc derivatives, which mediate electron transfer between the electrode and enzyme active site. Either voltammetric or amperometric signals originating from redox reactions of Fc are de...
We present the electrostatic complexation between polyelectrolytes and charged nanoparticles. The nanoparticles in solution are γ-Fe2O3 (maghemite) spheres with 8.3 nm diameter and anionic surface charges. The complexation was monitored using three different formulation pathways such as direct mixing, dilution, and dialysis. In the first process, the hybrids were obtained by mixing stock soluti...
Effect of norfloxacin (Nor) on the sorption of 1,3-dinitrobenzene (1,3-DNB), and PAHs (naphthalene (NAPH), phenanthrene (PHEN) and pyrene (PYR)) to K(+)-montmorillonite was studied. Nor suppressed 1,3-DNB sorption due to their competition for the same sorption sites. 1,3-DNB was sorbed on K(+)-montmorillonite surface via cation-polar interaction and n-π electron donor-acceptor interaction. Nor ...
