BACKGROUND Immersion in water during labour is an important non-pharmacological method to manage labour pain, particularly in midwifery-led care settings where pharmacological methods are limited. This study investigates the association between immersion for pain relief and transfer before birth and other maternal outcomes. METHODS A prospective cohort study of 16,577 low risk nulliparous wom...
We present a new method to show concentration of the upper tail of random variables that can be written as sums of variables with plenty of independence. We compare our method with the martingale method by Kim and Vu, which often leads to similar results. Some applications are given to the number XG of copies of a graph G in the random graph G(n, p). In particular, for G = K4 and G = C4 we impr...
The fitness-level method, also called the method of f -based partitions, is an intuitive and widely used technique for the running time analysis of randomized search heuristics. It was originally defined to prove upper and lower bounds on the expected running time. Recently, upper tail bounds were added to the technique; however, these tail bounds only apply to running times that are at least t...
We develop a GMM estimator for stationary heavy tailed data by trimming an asymptotically vanishing sample portion of the estimating equations. Trimming ensures the estimator is asymptotically normal, and self-normalization implies we do not need to know the rate of convergence. Tail -trimming, however, ensures asymmetric models are covered under rudimentary assumptions about the thresholds, an...
When we use the entropy method to get the tail bounds, typically the left tail bounds are not good comparing with the right ones. Up to now this asymmetry has been observed many times. Surprisingly we find an entropy method for the left tail that works in the resembling way that it works for the right tail. This new method does not work in all the cases. We provide a meaningful example.
Cold air or ice water can be used to chill poultry carcasses after slaughter. The objective of this study was to compare the effect of 2 chill methods on broiler carcass bacteria. Broiler carcasses were cut in half along the dorsal-ventral midline; one half was subjected to an ice-water immersion chill in an agitated bath for 50 min, whereas the reciprocal half was subjected to an air chill in ...

Pain is an ill-defined, disabling accompaniment of many medical conditions. It is often evoked by an external and internal noxious stimulus. It affects millions of people suffering with depression and other psychiatric disorders. Most of the antidepressants are having analgesic capacity to treat the pain by inhibiting nociceptive stimuli by increasing the seratonergic and noradrenergic transmis...
