Subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn is an unusual form of panniculitis, with few cases described in medical literature. The disease affects newborns at term or post-term, with normal general health. We describe two cases of newborns affected by the disease. One of them already had lesions since birth. Also, we discuss the use of puncture for diagnostic assistance.
Approval of inhaled nitric oxide by the US Food and Drug Administration for hypoxic respiratory failure of the term and near-term newborn provides an important new therapy for this serious condition. This statement addresses the conditions under which inhaled nitric oxide should be administered to the neonate with hypoxic respiratory failure.
AIM Gastric aspiration is still applied in many centres during delivery room management of the newborn without any supporting evidence. We aimed to determine whether gastric aspiration affects vital signs, oxygenation, nutrition and short-term prognosis of the newborn. METHOD A total of 310 eligible healthy term newborns, identified from a total of 1300 live births, were randomly allocated to...
OBJECTIVE Physiologic and pathologic comparison of two modes of assisted ventilation, nasal intermittent positive-pressure ventilation (NIPPV) and synchronized intermittent mandatory ventilation (SIMV), in spontaneously breathing term newborn piglets with saline lavage-induced lung injury. DESIGN After inducing acute lung injury via repetitive saline lavage, piglets were randomized to NIPPV (...
Tim study of refraction in newborn infants may be helpful in understanding the incidence of refractive errors in later years. In this paper, the refractive conditions of 100 newborn infants are reported. Not much work on this subject has been done in the past. Sorsby, Benjamin, and Sheridan (1961) reported the refractive condition of the eyes in the age-group 2 to 23 years, and Hosaka (1963) ob...
Piglets are often used as experimental models for studying cerebrovascular responses in newborn infants. However, the mechanical characteristics of piglets' middle cerebral arteries (MCA) are not well characterized. Additionally, the vessels' response to dopamine, the most commonly used vasopressor in newborns, is not characterized in piglets' MCA. Finally, the influence of preterm birth on the...
With the rapid implementation of universal newborn hearing screening (UNHS) programs, a test of middle-ear function for infants is urgently needed. Recent evidence suggests that 1 kHz tympanometry may be effective. Normative data are presented for newborn intensive care unit (NICU) graduates tested at a mean age of 3.9 weeks (Study 1) and full-term infants tested at 2-4 weeks (Study 2) who pass...
autopsy findings in 138 newborn infants which died in a university nursery during 3 years are reviewed and discussed. 80 per cent were premature and small- for- date newborns of up to 2500 g birth weight. most of these cases showed in addition to general prematurely signs, respiratory tract diseases such as atelectasia, amniotic fluid aspiration and hyaline membrane disease. the full term infan...
Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is an important lung developmental pathophysiology that affects many premature infants each year. Newborn animal models employing both premature and term animals have been used over the years to study various components of BPD. This review describes some of the neonatal rabbit studies that have contributed to the understanding of BPD, including those using term ...
BACKGROUND Galactosemia due to complete or near-complete galactose-1-phosphate uridyltransferase (GALT) deficiency was the first disorder added to the pioneering newborn screening panel besides phenylketonuria. In the last 50 years, many criticisms have been focused on the opportunity of its inclusion. Consequently, long-term single center experiences with this issue are generally lacking. ME...
