1. Neurons with proprioceptive or cutaneous receptive fields associated with the hand were identified in the ventral bank of the cingulate sulcus in the monkey. Cells with proprioceptive fields outnumbered cells receiving cutaneous afferents by more than three to one. No cells were encountered that received convergent proprioceptive and cutaneous input. The high concentration of these neurons i...

Most manual grips can be divided in precision and power grips on the basis of phylogenetic and functional considerations. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to compare human brain activity during force production by the right hand when subjects used a precision grip and a power grip. During the precision-grip task, subjects applied fine grip forces between the tips of the index finge...

Repetitive, high-force pinch grip exertions are common in many occupational activities. The goal of the current study was to quantify the relationship between lateral pinch grip span (distance between thumb and index finger) and lateral pinch grip strength. An experiment was conducted in which 40 participants performed maximal lateral pinch grip exertions at 11 levels of grip span distances (0,...

In this paper we present a robust hybrid motion/force controller for rigid robot manipulators. The main contribution of this paper is that the proposed hybrid control system is able to accomplish motion objectives in free directions and force objectives in constrained directions under parametric uncertainty both in robot dynamics and stiffness constraint constant. Also, the given scheme is prov...

Arrays of microneedles (MNAs) are integrated in an out-of-plane fashion with a base plate and can serve as patches for the release of drugs and vaccines. We used soft-lithography and micromolding to manufacture ceramic nanoporous (np)MNAs. Failure modes of ceramic npMNAs are as yet poorly understood and the question remained: is our npMNA platform technology ready for microneedle (MN) assembly ...

We report a case of Klinefelter's syndrome owing to maternal meiotic error associated with triphalangeal thumb and delta phalanx bilaterally. There are no previous reports of similar cases and triphalangism with delta phalanx abnormalities of both thumbs might therefore be considered a further, but rare, manifestation of this aneuploidy.

Mechanical and neurological couplings exist between musculotendon units of the human hand and digits. Studies have begun to understand how these muscles interact when accomplishing everyday tasks, but there are still unanswered questions regarding the control limitations of individual muscles. Using intramuscular electromyographic (EMG) electrodes, this study examined subjects' ability to indiv...

BACKGROUND Trigger finger is most common in the ring finger, but the reason for this is not known. We hypothesized that the compliance of the A1 pulley might be one of the factors responsible for this phenomenon. The purpose of this study was therefore to compare the compliance of the normal A1 pulley of the thumb, index, middle, ring and little fingers using human cadavers. METHODS Eight nor...
