Tibial eminence fractures occur as a result of high amounts of tension placed upon the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). The incidence of these fractures is higher among adolescent girls due to their inherent skeletal immaturity. In such an injury, direct trauma causes an avulsion fracture occurring at the tibial eminence while the ACL is spared. Imaging is used to confirm the diagnosis of a ti...

Knee trauma and effusion are common Emergency Department presentations. This article outlines the clinician's sonographic approach to knee effusion detection and localisation. A case where lipohaemarthrosis was detected with ultrasound is demonstrated, and the characteristic appearance of this pathology discussed. The sonographic detection of the associated tibial fracture is also demonstrated.

The ipsilateral and contralateral fibulae have been used as a vascularised bone graft for loss of tibial bone usually by methods which have involved specialised microvascular techniques to preserve or re-establish the blood supply. We have developed a method of tibialisation of the fibula using the Ilizarov fixator system, ipsilateral vascularised fibular transport (IVFT), and have used it in f...

Fractures involving the proximal tibial epiphysis are rare and form 0.5% of all epiphyseal injuries. The specific anatomical and developmental features of the proximal tibial epiphysis make it vulnerable to unique patterns of fractures. Vitamin-D plays a vital role in bone homeostasis and its deficiency has an impact on fracture risk and healing. We present the first ever reported case of simul...

There are several definitions for bony nonunion. We use the one that defines it as no clinical, radiographic, or scintigraphic evidence of healing 12 months after injury and by the need for secondary surgery. Delayed union is defined as the completion of union Letter to the Editor Immediate interlocking nailing versus external fixation followed by delayed interlocking nailing for Gustilo type I...

Tibial tuberosity fractures are rare in childhood, most frequently due to excessive quadriceps muscle contraction. On performing long jump, a 15-year-old boy sustained tibial tuberosity avulsion fracture type II according to Watson-Jones. The patient was treated operatively with fragment repositioning and screw fixation. Ten months after the injury and rehabilitation, he resumed his sports acti...

High-energy tibial plateau fractures associated with severe soft tissue injury are difficult to manage. The risk of wound complications following open reduction and internal fixation is notably high owing to extensive soft tissue dissection. Alternatively, application of hybrid external fixator minimizes soft tissue dissection and provides adequate fracture stabilization to allow early range of...

Interlocking nailing is a widely accepted and performed treatment for tibial shaft fractures. The addition of percutaneously placed transfixation screws increases the stabilisation provided by intramedullary nailing; however, the technical complexity associated with the procedure has introduced new potential complications. We report a pseudoaneurysm of the anterior tibial artery caused by a pro...

We describe a patient who underwent arthroscopic pullout fixation for a posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) avulsion fracture. A 46-year-old female, injured in a fall while riding a motorcycle, was diagnosed with a right knee PCL tibial attachment avulsion fracture and underwent arthroscopic osteosynthesis. A Kirschner wire was drilled to a point just medial to the medial border of the anterior t...
