A core-promoter, approximately from -60 bp upstream to +40 bp downstream of a RNA polymerase (RNAP) II transcription start site (TSS), binds to the preinitiation complex (PIC) and determine the position of TSS. Using position-specific k-tuple feature variables, a quadratic discriminant analysis (QDA) method is shown to be very effective in identifying human core-promoters.

The promoter regions of approximately 40% of genes in the human genome are embedded in CpG islands, CpG-rich regions that frequently extend on the order of one kb 3' of the transcription start site (TSS) region. CpGs 3' of the TSS of actively transcribed CpG island promoters typically remain methylation-free, indicating that maintaining promoter-proximal CpGs in an unmethylated state may be imp...

BACKGROUND Streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is a rare and severe manifestation of group A streptococcal infection. The role of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) for streptococcal TSS in children is controversial. This study aims to describe the epidemiology of streptococcal TSS in children and to determine whether adjunctive therapy with IVIG is associated with improved outcomes. METH...

Relationships between satellite-derived water quality variables and river discharges, concentrations and loads of nutrients, organic carbon, and sediments were investigated over a 9-year period (2003–2011) in Pensacola Bay, Florida, USA. These analyses were conducted to better understand which river forcing factors were the primary drivers of estuarine variability in several water quality varia...

The trans-sialidases (TSs) from Trypanosoma cruzi, the agent of Chagas disease, are virulence factors shed to the bloodstream that induce strong alterations in the immune system. Here, we report that both enzymatically active TS (aTS) and its lectinlike isoform (iTS) disturb CD4 T cell physiology, inducing downregulation of Th1 cell functionality and in vivo cell expansion. By using ovalbumin-s...

Suspended sediment dynamics of Corpus Christi Bay, Texas, USA, a shallow-water wind-driven estuary, were investigated by combining field and satellite measurements of total suspended solids (TSS). An algorithm was developed to transform 500-mModerate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Aqua satellite reflectance data into estimated TSS values. The algorithm was developed using a reflec...

Spectra, salinity, total suspended solids (TSS, in mg/L) and colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM, ag(400) at 400 nm) sampled in stations in 44 different locations on December 18, 19 and 21, in 2006 were measured and analyzed. The studied field covered a large variety of optically different waters, the absorption coefficient of CDOM ([ag(400)] in m(-1)) varied between 0.488 and 1.41 m(-1), an...

Characteristics of surface runoff from a 0.14-km2 urban catchment with separated sewer in Macau was investigated. Water quality measurements of surface runoff were carried out on five rainfall events during the period of August to November, 2005. Water quality parameters such as pH, turbidity, TSS, COD, TN, Zn, Pb, and Cu were analyzed. The results show that TN and COD are the major pollutants ...

Considerable attention has been given to the understanding of how nucleosomes are altered or removed from the transcription start site of RNA polymerase II genes to enable transcription to proceed. This has led to the view that for transcriptional activation to occur, the transcription start site (TSS) must become depleted of nucleosomes. However, we have shown that this is not the case with di...
