We report an adolescent with recurrent bilateral parotitis with pneumoparotitis and subcutaneous emphysema due to self pneumoinsufflation by a Valsalva like maneuver. Investigations for recurrent parotitis did not yield any clue. His la belle indifference, prolonged school absence and the presence of sibling rivalry helped us identify the psychological cause.

Physiologic changes in the circulatory system caused by performing the Valsalva maneuver are blunted or absent in patients with congestive heart failure. Previously there has been no noninvasive method for examining cardiac chamber size during this maneuver. M-mode echocardiography was used to evaluate possible changes in cardiac chamber dimensions in 12 normal subjects (group I) and 15 patient...

Bilateral carotid body tumor resection causes a permanent attenuation of vagal baroreflex sensitivity. We retrospectively examined the effects of bilateral carotid body tumor resection on the baroreflex control of sympathetic nerve traffic. Muscle sympathetic nerve activity was recorded in 5 patients after bilateral carotid body tumor resection (1 man and 4 women, 51+/-11 years) and 6 healthy c...

Assessment of the complex relations between pressure and volume in the right atrium has been hampered in the past by difficulties in the measurement of atrial volume. Accordingly, in the present study the dynamics of right atrial pressure-volume relations were examined (with the use of an impedance catheter to measure right atrial volume) in patients with and without an atrial septal defect. Ri...

Clinical symptoms affecting the lower extremities are common among lumber spinal disorder patients. Pain, numbness and sensory disturbance are major signs of these symptoms, and have been suggested to be related to sympathetic nerve disturbance. This study was designed to examine whether these patients experience a difference in sympathetic nerve flow in terms of muscle sympathetic nerve activi...

A Valsalva-like maneuver was performed during cardiac catheterization by a normal group of individuals and a group of patients with acoustic evidence of mitral stenosis. The latter group was subdivided according to its response to the maneuver. The mild group, like the normal group, showed an "overshoot" of blood pressure and a bradyeardia in the post-straining period, whereas the severe mitral...

BACKGROUND The left ventricular filling pattern may show changes during respiration, which are generally used in the diagnosis of diastolic dysfunction. The clinical importance of the respiratory E/A wave pattern change has been investigated in a limited number of studies. The aim of the present study was to assess the diastolic function of hypertensive patients with respiratory changes in mitr...

OBJECTIVE To clarify whether the 'plane of minimal dimensions' of the levator hiatus on three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound accurately represents the minimal anatomical transverse hiatal dimension during a Valsalva maneuver. METHODS In this retrospective study of 3D transperineal ultrasound and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, datasets from 19 female participants were used to measure the transv...
