The origin of the baryon asymmetry of the Universe is one of the key open questions to be addressed in particle physics and cosmology. Assuming a negligible initial baryon asymmetry, its dynamical production can happen in presence of non-conservation of the baryon and/or lepton number, violation of the C and CP symmetries and out-of-equilibrium conditions. Leptogenesis is a mechanism, proposed ...
These lectures cover different aspects of the subject of CP-Violation, from its description inside the Standard Model to the phenomenological analysis of the K 0 − ¯ K 0 system and the prospects for its manifestation in B-physics.
We consider CP violating effects in decays of the type B ± → γa ± 1,2 where a 1,2 are the J P = 1 + and 2 + resonances each decaying to the common final state via a ± 1,2 → π ± ρ 0. The resonances enhance the CP asymmetries and also knowledge of their masses and widths facilitates calculations of the effects. Several types of CP asymmetries are sizable (∼ 10–30%) requiring about (3–10) × 10 8 B...
Recently a model of chaotic inflation was proposed, where the right handed sneutrinos drive the baryogenesis. We study some of the details of the model, particularly the aspect of CP violation, and determine the number of right handed sneutrinos required for the viability of such models.
We discuss the discovery potential for New Physics of various measurements of CP violation. If nature is supersymmetric, then the flavor problem is even more mysterious than in the standard model. We show how we can learn about the mechanism that solves the supersymmetric flavor problem from measurements of mixing and CP violation in K, D and B decays.
Charm transitions play a unique dual role in the modern investigations of flavor physics. They provide valuable supporting measurements for studies of CPviolation in B-decays, such as formfactors and decays constants, as well as outstanding opportunities for indirect searches for physics beyond the Standard Model (SM). It must be noted that in many dynamical models of new physics the effects of...
CP symmetry and its violation are important guides to fundamental quark properties and to the understanding of the matter-antimatter asymmetry of the Universe. In this review, an updated version of one presented earlier in the year [1], we describe past, present, and future aspects of CP violation studies. After an illustration of fundamental iscrete symmetries in Maxwell's equations (Sec. II),...
The B0 s meson is a bound state of b and s type quarks. A CP violation parameter, βs, of that system is the analogue of the parameter β measured precisely at the B factories in B0 decays. The standard model predicts, robustly and precisely, a value of βs which is very close to zero. The CDF and D0 experiments now have about 2000 fully reconstructed and flavor-tagged B0 s → J/ψφ decays each, wit...
In the Standard Model (SM), CP violation is described by the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) quark mixing matrix, V [1]. In particular an irreducible complex phase in the 3 × 3 mixing matrix is the source of all the SM CP violation. Measurements of time-dependent CP asymmetries in the B meson decays, through the interference between decays with and without B −B0 mixing, have provides stringent ...
We present an analysis of the decayD0→K+π− based on FOCUS data. From a sample of 234 signal events, we find a branching ratio of Γ(D →Kπ) Γ(D0→K−π+) = (0.429 − 0.061 ± 0.027)% under the assumptions of no mixing and no CP violation. Allowing for CP violation, we find a branching ratio of (0.429 ± 0.063 ± 0.028)% and a CP asymmetry of 0.18± 0.14± 0.04. The branching ratio for the case of mixing w...
