Extremely alkaline ground water has been found underneath many shuttered steel mills and slag dumps and has been an impediment to the cleanup and economic redevelopment of these sites because little is known about the geochemistry. A large number of these sites occur in the Lake Calumet region of Chicago, Illinois, where large-scale infilling of the wetlands with steel slag has created an aquif...

We propose a novel framework for hair animation as well as hair-water interaction that supports millions of hairs. First, we develop a hair animation framework that embeds hair into a tetrahedralized volume mesh that we kinematically skin to deform and follow the exterior of an animated character. Allowing the hairs to follow their precomputed embedded locations in the kinematically deforming s...

The origins of increased stream flow and spring discharge following earthquakes have been the subject of controversy, in large part because there are many models to explain observations and few measurements suitable for distinguishing between hypotheses. On October 30, 2007 a magnitude 5.5 earthquake occurred near the Alum Rock springs, California, USA. Within a day we documented a several-fold...

An approach is presented to study the functioning of a karstic massif and assess the adverse effects of the anthropogenic pressure by monitoring some water chemical and physical parameters of its main springs. The approach has been applied to the Sette Comuni Plateau (Veneto Region, Italy) hosting a well developed karstic system, whose aquifer presents high vulnerability and undergoes a relevan...

This paper describes a spring-based model for the interaction of water and land, which reconciles realism and fast rendering. The system controls the motion and interdependences of water vertices utilizing two kinds of springs and collision detection. As a consequence, a wave's movement affects the waves around it, and a wave 'hits' the land, rebounding with a suitably changed height and velocity.

A new genus and species of stygobiontic bidessine dytiscid beetle, Comaldessus stygius, from Comal Springs, Texas, is described and compared with the proposed sister epigean genus Uuarus and the only other known stygobiontic bidessine water beetles, Trogloguignotus concii Sanfilippo from Venezuela and Uvarus chappuisi (Peschet) from Africa. Distinctive characters of the adult are illustrated wi...

BACKGROUND Accesses to safe water is a universal need however, many of the world's population lack access to adequate and safe water. Consumption of water contaminated causes health risk to the public and the situation is serous in rural areas. OBJECTIVES To assess the bacteriological and physico-chemical quality of drinking water sources in a rural community of Ethiopia. METHODS Water samp...
