Necrotizing fasciitis is a destructive invasive infection of skin, subcutaneous tissue and deep fascia, with relative sparing of muscle. It is a life-threatening condition. Here we report two cases of necrotizing fasciitis, which were not responding to conventional antibiotic therapy and local wound care after aggressive debridement. These two cases were treated simply by local application of 3...

Surgical site infections (SSIs) are a significant source of morbidity, mortality, and cost associated with small animal surgery. The most well-established strategies to reduce the impact of SSI are preventive, focusing on bolstering host immunity while decreasing wound contamination during surgery. When SSI is identified, the use of consistent definitions and culture-based therapy help to facil...

The authors describe a clinical case of successful treatment patient with an ischiorectal abscess complicated by extensive purulentnecrotic phlegmon on the anterior abdominal wall and right thigh. Topical negative pressure wound technique (NPWT) was used. Its combination surgical debridement rational systemic antibiotic therapy has been shown to contribute this life-threatening pathology.

A simulation-based training system for surgical wound debridement was developed and comprises a multimedia introduction, a surgical simulator (tutorial component), and an assessment component. The simulator includes two PCs, a haptic device, and mirrored display. Debridement is performed on a virtual leg model with a shallow laceration wound superimposed. Trainees are instructed to remove debri...

Power-pulsed lavage is a common adjunct to surgical wound debridement, although few studies have examined the effect of this technique in lower extremity wounds. Fifty-five consecutively enrolled patients underwent 73 surgical debridements with power-pulsed lavage, and specimens were obtained for Gram stain and culture and sensitivity analyses before and after lavage. A number of risk factors w...

Maggot debridement therapy (MDT) is increasingly being used as a fast and effective treatment of non-healing wounds. It has been demonstrated that the application of sterile larvae to an infected non-healing wound results in the removal of necrotic tissue (debridement), disinfection, rapid elimination of infecting microorganisms and enhancement of the healing process. Many studies have provided...

Objective: Many substances have been used for wound-burn treatment to date. Recent studies focused not only on covering the wound but also production of dressings that will provide patient comfort at highest level. This review mentions types and expected features an ideal dressing. An dressing should close protect against external factors such as microorganisms. It must appropriate absorption c...

Recent studies have shown that Cdk5, a member of the cyclin-dependent-kinase family, regulates adhesion and migration in a mouse corneal epithelial cell line. Here, we extend these findings to corneal wound healing in vivo and examine the mechanism linking Cdk5 to cytoskeletal reorganization and migration. Cdk5 was overexpressed in the corneal epithelium of transgenic mice under control of the ...
