We report here a rare case of acute renal failure following near-drowning in sea water. A 21-year old college student presented in acute renal failure 48 hours after a near-drowning event. Investigations revealed rhabdomyolysis to be the cause of renal failure.
Serum trypsin levels have been estimated by radioimmunoassay in 26 healthy controls (248 +/- 94.9 micrograms/l; mean +/- s.d.), 12 patients with chronic renal failure (1100 +/- 584 micrograms/l), 34 with acute pancreatitis (1399 +/- 618 micrograms/l) and 23 with acute non-pancreatic abdominal conditions. Mean serum trypsin in acute pancreatitis and in chronic renal failure was significantly hig...
Acute renal failure is present in 1 to 5 percent of patients at hospital admission and affects 15 to 20 percent of patients in intensive care units [2]. In a study in Madrid, pre-renal type of acute renal failure accounted for 21% of cases, post-renal type constituted 10% of cases and intrinsic-type accounted for 69% of cases [2]. Renal replacement therapy is the life saving procedure for patie...
Hemodialysis is being implicated in the development of metabolic disturbances, as complications have been observed and the role of trace metals in their development has been questioned. In 78 renal failure patients who underwent hemodialysis, serum levels of zinc and copper were determined before and after first hemodialysis. Acute and chronic renal failure patients were found to have lowe...
Thirty neonates with acute renal failure were studied, 27 of whom died (90%) including nine of 12 treated by peritoneal dialysis. Three main aetiological groups were identified. Septicaemia was a principal cause of late onset acute renal failure, with an incidence equal to that of serious perinatal disorders. It is recommended that tolazoline should be used with caution in the treatment of hype...
Rhabdomyolysis is a syndrome caused by skeletal muscle cells destruction which can occur for many reasons, including prolonged immobilization. The main complication of the syndrome is the development of acute renal failure. Rhabdomyolysis and myoglobinuria are responsible for approximately 5% of all causes of acute renal failure in the USA. The cause of rhabdomyolysis is often multifactorial, a...

Background: Microalbuminuria and serum creatinine are the specific markers of acute renal injury. Perinatal asphyxia is responsible for 50% of all neonatal deaths and nonoliguric acute renal injuryis one of its complications. This study was undertaken to determine the efficacy of serum creatinine and microalbuminuria for early diagnosis of renal injury in severely asphyxiated neonates in Calaba...
