Patients with cirrhosis who are hospitalized for an acute decompensation (AD) and also have organ failure(s) are at high risk of short-term death. These patients have a syndrome called Acute-on-Chronic Liver Failure (ACLF). ACLF is now considered as a new syndrome that it is distinct from "mere" AD not only because of the presence of organ failure(s) and high short-term mortality but also becau...
To investigate the influence of alcohol intake on tumor growth of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients with type C cirrhosis, we examined the tumor volume doubling time (TVDT) of 35 nodules from 35 cases of HCC, calculated through ultrasonographic imaging. The patients were divided into two groups according to their drinking habit; 21 habitual drinkers (alcohol group; 80g ethanol/day for ...
In a study of 195 patients derived from five centres in northern Britain and with histologically confirmed alcoholic liver disease we have found an increased prevalence of serological markers of hepatitis B. This increased prevalence was found in each of the five centres; the overall frequency ranged from 11% sero-positivity in fatty liver, 12% in alcoholic hepatitis and 27% in cirrhosis.
N on-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a clinicopathological condition characterised by a wide spectrum of histological abnormalities and clinical outcomes. The underlying histological abnormality is hepatic steatosis, characterised by fat accumulation, which may progress to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), characterised in turn by steatosis, periportal inflammation, and ballooning ...
BACKGROUND Alcohol abuse has deleterious effects on human health by disrupting the functions of many organs and systems. Gut microbiota has been implicated in the pathogenesis of alcohol-related liver diseases, with its composition manifesting expressed dysbiosis in patients suffering from alcoholic dependence. Due to its inherent plasticity, gut microbiota is an important target for prevention...
Mallory's (;alcoholic') hyaline has been found in hepatocytes in 18 of 70 patients with primary biliary cirrhosis. These inclusions have previously been noted in only three cases of primary biliary cirrhosis. Current views on the nature of Mallory's hyaline are briefly discussed.
Although alcohol abuse is the most common cause of liver cirrhosis in the United States, the enhancing effects of alcohol on the long-term prognosis of hepatitis C virus (HCV) related liver cirrhosis has not been clarified. To investigate how alcohol abuse influences the prognosis of hepatitis virus related liver cirrhosis, we studied 716 Japanese patients. Cumulative survival and hepatocellula...
Chronic encapsulated intracerebral hematoma (CEIH) is a rare cerebrovascular disease. Here, we describe a case of a patient with alcoholic cirrhosis and an abnormal coagulation state that was treated with minimally invasive endoscopic hematoma removal. A 54-year-old man presented with a 2-week history of incoherent speech, incontinence, and repeated stumbling. Laboratory analysis showed thrombo...
Whole body potassium measurements were performed on 55 cirrhotic patients in different stages of the disease. They included 34 with alcoholic cirrhosis, 10 with cryptogenic cirrhosis, eight with chronic active hepatitis, and three with haemochromatosis. Serial measurements were carried out in 21 patients. The findings of this study indicate that: (1) the aetiology of the cirrhosis is important ...
The dynamics and role of cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs), natural killer (NK) cells, and NKT cells in the life-threatening inflammatory disease alcoholic hepatitis is largely unknown. These cells directly kill infected and damaged cells through, e.g., degranulation and interferon-γ (IFNγ) production, but cause tissue damage if overactivated. They also assist tissue repair via IL-22 production. W...
