A final concentration of 3 x 10(-5)M spermine or spermidine inhibited the growth of mammalian tubercle bacilli in a modified Dubos liquid medium. Various related amino compounds, including isolated portions of the spermine molecule and the products of its chemical degradation, did not manifest similar antimycobacterial activity.
We investigated the antimycobacterial role of myeloperoxidase (MPO), one of the most abundant granule proteins in human neutrophils. Our data indicate that purified MPO, in the presence of hydrogen peroxide, exerts a consistent killing activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv and against a clinical isolate. The activity is time and dose dependent and requires the presence of chloride i...
Seventeen new derivatives of the natural diterpene leubethanol, including some potential pro-drugs, with changes in the functionality of the aliphatic chain or modifications of aromatic ring and the phenolic group, were synthesized and tested in vitro by the MABA technique for their activity against the H37Rv strain of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Some compounds showed antimycobacterial selectiv...
Mycobacterium asiaticum was isolated from fluid aspirated from an olecranon bursa that had become inflamed following a superficial injury. Other possible causes of the inflammation were excluded. No specific antimycobacterial therapy was given. The infection responded to drainage, regular dressing, and immobilization. Our experience suggests that M. asiaticum is a potential cause of infection o...
A brother and sister presented with recurrent respiratory infections. Investigations showed combined cellular and humoral immune defects and non-caseating granulomata in lungs, liver, lymph nodes, and skin. Despite antimycobacterial chemotherapy and corticosteroids in the brother and the additional treatment of human immunoglobulin injections in the sister both patients deteriorated with pulmon...
Mycobacterium tilburgii is a nonculturable nontuberculous mycobacterium identifiable only by molecular methods. We report a case of disseminated M. tilburgii infection illustrating the importance of 16S rRNA gene sequencing to determine the responsible mycobacterial pathogen and the difficulties in tailoring antimycobacterial treatment in the absence of a culturable organism.
Macrophages (M(phi)s) play a central role as anti-microbial effector cells in the expression of host resistance to mycobacterial infections. With respect to antimicrobial effector molecules of host M(phi) against mycobacterial pathogens, recent studies suggest the possibility that the reactive nitrogen intermediates (RNI)--and reactive oxygen intermediates-independent antimycobacterial mechanis...
INTRODUCTION Th1 response is known to play a dominant role in the resistance to tuberculosis. Nevertheless, IFN gamma levels are frequently increased in tuberculous patients, especially at the site of the disease. It is also possible that the shift toward Th2 response is responsible for the loss of resistance. The aim of this study was to compare the Th1 function of peripheral blood cells and t...
introduction many studies have shown epidemiological links between strains isolated in tap water, and those isolated from patients. molecular methods linked to pcr are more reliable and faster for identification of non- tuberculous mycobacteria(ntm). in this study molecular methods were used for identification and typing of ntm. materials and methods five hundred ml of 85 water samp...
